Punchy Proverbs of the Week–From cloaked maliciousness to…egos?

The Punchy Proverbs of the week!

(1) A seemingly innocent question stated with malicious intent, bereft of any congeniality, is nothing more than an insult cloaked in goodwill.

(2) Many people mistake excitement for nervousness. Those who do can be understood. Excitement is happy nervousness; nervousness is sad excitement.

(3) An ego is strange and inexplicable. When injured, it stings; when complimented, it feels slighted.

Hmm… Interesting. I’m not sure about #2. Thoughts? Opinions?

As usual, let the battle begin. Which proverb is monumental? Which did V. Shnodgrate just get plum wrong?

I can see the link between excitement and nervousness but happy nervousness? Sad excitement? I don’t think I’ve had enough coffee to battle with this one yet ;-)

Me neither! I thought that one was pretty…quirky!!!

I like number 2!! Feels fitting to me as a person, I’m always excited… whether nervous, happy or sad. Each excitedness is different tho. (If that makes sense)

    • 4 Professor VJ Duke June 18, 2013 at 16:36

It does! Thanks for your thoughts!

    I’m excited about 2.

    • 6 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2013 at 23:42

      Not nervous?

      • 7 Mikels Skele June 18, 2013 at 04:18

        Of course.

I think 1 is the winner. I’m not sure about 2 or 3. They don’t really resonate with me.

    • 9 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2013 at 23:42

      Yeah, 1 really hits home.

I get number 2. People default their definition of excitement to mean happy, but all it really means — happy or sad — is agitated. Thoughts?

    • 11 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2013 at 23:41

That’s very interesting, Brian. And I must say, I agree. Great thought!

I’m not sure about number 2 either. I might be nervous about owing tax money, but definitely not excited about that!

    • 13 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2013 at 23:41

How about sad excitement? (Don’t think that even works!)

  7. 14 ladycheetah7 June 17, 2013 at 13:55

#1- happens on conference calls all the time.
#2- sounds strange but since emotions are illogical I give that one a thumbs up.
#3- I agree. People don’t accept compliments well. I wonder instead of a compliment perhaps I should give them the option of a compliment or would they like a hot cup of pipping insult. Lol!

    • 15 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2013 at 23:40

Ooo…the hot cup of pipping insult! Give them that!!! Not me, of course! :) Compliments are just fine!

I’m not sure about either 2 or 3 – so 1 has to win by default. But I’d love a Mercedes-Benz!

    • 17 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2013 at 23:40

      Corvette all the way!

      • 18 FictionFan June 18, 2013 at 00:32

Too American and the steering wheel’s on the wrong side – I’ll settle for a nice little F-type Jaguar convertible…

      • 19 Professor VJ Duke June 18, 2013 at 01:11

Too American?! Oh, I forgot. It makes sense for someone who prefers Darcy’s eyes to Twain’s mustache!! ;)

    First one. I’ve done it.

      Me too!
