Why Professor?

The professor has ardently desired to post about this vexing quandary for a while. You see, there are some very vexing preconceived notions about professors in general.

And this professor isn’t fond of them.

Okay, then! Why Professor?

Well, ‘professor’ has two principal meanings:

A. a teacher in a university or college

…and…

B. somebody who professes a belief in something

Now this, dear PLF, is an interest! This professor is a professor in the sense of definition B—not A!

What does this mean, you may ask?

Well, it means—for one thing—that this professor isn’t bright enough to instruct others in a particular subject, and it also means that this professor professes a belief in something.

Of course, that something is the Punchy Lands (PL).

Now you may be wondering how the professor became known as the professor. It is a long story, and a vexing question that I hope to answer in my memoirs one day.

Interestingly enough, the idea of me actually writing my memoirs makes this professor seem like the popular conception of a professor, doesn’t it?

I suppose—in a sense, then—that this professor is an all-encompassing professor, if that makes sense. Even further, I suppose that since this professor teaches about the Punchy Lands, he can be considered a professor in the sense of definition A.

We’ve come full circle.

I would also like to offer—though I may regret it—that if there is anything you want to know about the professor, to just ask in the comments below. Blatherings, after all, should be something about the professor, I think.

Of course, I do reserve the right not to answer! Now how cool is that?! And also in the words of Schwarz, “Chickit!”

Has this post changed how you think of the professor?

==]:-{)= The official professor smiley. I’ve worked long and hard on that, I’ll have you know!

And, now, a picture:

m42_hst_big[1]

Sometimes I think that this professor lives in there—somewhere. Anywhere.

AHA! I finally found the post you were talking about!

    haha

I had to stalk your page, but I found it.

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke October 11, 2013 at 19:24

Awesome! I’m glad you found it. The professor would have been happy to send you the link, though…

      And what did you think?

      • 3 holdenlyric October 11, 2013 at 21:38

Haha well I thought you were actually a college professor, considering you sound EXACTLY like one of my professors :p

      • 4 Professor VJ Duke October 11, 2013 at 22:21

Oh dear. I am sorry. Which one? He’s the professor of science?

  2. 5 lexborgia September 23, 2013 at 08:55

    You’re completely potty. A madman.

    • 6 Professor VJ Duke September 23, 2013 at 15:29

Yes, I fear that’s so. But is it a bad thing?

      • 7 lexborgia September 23, 2013 at 18:54

Not at all; insanity is a much coveted Attribute, and a Goldmine if put to proper use. You’re doing okay.

      • 8 Professor VJ Duke September 23, 2013 at 19:46

So, that’s great then! I feel very professorish now. Did you read the Punchy Times today?

  3. 9 Elina September 13, 2013 at 11:07

Ah, now it finally makes sense that you are the only one :)

    • 10 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 14:47

      Yes, the only professor!!!

  4. 11 annetbell September 12, 2013 at 19:15

    Hmmm.. . . interesting…and I am speechless
    Namaste…..from a professor’s wife

Oh yes, thanks for your greetings…visit my posts again soon and often!

    • 12 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 00:05

Oh no! Speechless about what? The professorishness? The Punchyness?

What are you saying about the professor’s wife?

      • 13 annetbell September 13, 2013 at 00:16

She is just a simple elementary teacher. The professor is the smart one. I was dumbfounded by your. . . by just you. . . .

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 00:19

There is no Ms. Professor, you know… How could you possibly be dumbfounded by the professor! He’s quite professorish and…Punchyish?

      • 15 annetbell September 13, 2013 at 00:23

        What exactly does Punchyish mean?

      • 16 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 00:30

Well, I suppose someone could be classified as ‘Punchyish’ if they exhibit certain tendencies and aspects of the PL. And the PL, you know, has been determined by the Punchies. (Character profiles are in the Hut. Just hover over the page.) Did I horribly confuse you?

      • 17 annetbell September 13, 2013 at 00:33

Yes. . But never mind . Of what discipline are you a professor?

      • 18 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 00:59

I profess the PL–is that what you mean?

      • 19 annetbell September 13, 2013 at 01:03

I don’t know what PL is. I meant History, Chemistry, Physics etc. but I think I can answer that it is a professorship in BS. You will fit right in . . Trust me!

      • 20 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 01:05

PL stands for the Punchy Lands. Sorry! We use a bunch of short phrases like that. Definitely physics, madam, definitely. ;)

      • 21 annetbell September 13, 2013 at 01:06

You are sure it isn’t BS?

      • 22 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 14:40

Of course the professor is sure, dadblameit! The PL is quite real. The question is, why do you think it is?

      • 23 annetbell September 13, 2013 at 01:29

Oh , I am not familiar with the acronym of PL , short for Punchy Lands. Now I know!

      • 24 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 14:41

Yes! That’s it! Nothing short for the professor…yet.

  5. 25 Ms. Vee September 12, 2013 at 17:07

    Professor, Professor…:)

    • 26 Professor VJ Duke September 12, 2013 at 18:28

 Yes, that’s me. And now you know the secret!

      • 27 Ms. Vee September 12, 2013 at 18:37

I will never tell. I’m good at keeping secrets. :)

      • 28 Professor VJ Duke September 12, 2013 at 18:47

That’s great! There are many secrets about the professor, you know…

  6. 29 Jennifer September 12, 2013 at 10:29

I’ve seen that smile before somewhere….

    • 30 Professor VJ Duke September 12, 2013 at 12:59

      No you haven’t, dadblameit!

      • 31 Jennifer September 12, 2013 at 20:36

        Pretty sure I have!

      • 32 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 00:10

        You have not! (Where?)

      • 33 Jennifer September 13, 2013 at 01:03

I’m sure there was an email somewhere with that smiley face on it…?

      • 34 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 01:05

        From the professor?

      • 35 Jennifer September 13, 2013 at 01:08

Unless there is two of you. Yes, from you.

      • 36 Professor VJ Duke September 13, 2013 at 14:41

There is only one professor, you know.

  7. 37 Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister September 11, 2013 at 22:21

I’m completely fine with you just the way you are, although I was hoping that your quick-wittedness was being used to mold young adult minds…

Wait, I suppose it tis, isn’t it. :) Keep up the work being done in Punchy Land. I kinda want them all to wear dark rimed glasses one day, holding a smoldering gaze while drinking a cup of coffee, though, I mean at some point. That will also keep your readers interested in coming back.

Keep up the smart talk! It’s taking you places, Professor.

    • 38 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:13

      Well, thank you!

In a way, yes, it is, I suppose. Who do you want to wear dark rimmed glasses?

And not coffee, you know. Tea is must. :)

Many thanks! But I must say, the professor feels very dull at times.

      • 39 Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister September 11, 2013 at 23:18

To be dull is allowed. We’re all human.

Yes, I want to live in a world where creative and smart people all wear dark rimmed glasses…a Clark Kent kind of moment.

I enjoyed the way you explained yourself today. Round of tea, for all!

      • 40 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:22

:D That would be cool! Dark rimmed glasses, ha! I do like the idea.

I accept! But it must be green, cherry tea.

  8. 41 sonya solomonovich September 11, 2013 at 21:52

Well, this is rather confounding. At first, the professor was presented as being somewhere in the ocean, and now in outer space. Quite a versatile individual, this professor. Will he ever show himself to the PLF?

    • 42 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:11

Isn’t the professor always confounding? :)

Possibly…would you want to see him?

What are you thoughts on the professor?

      • 43 sonya solomonovich September 11, 2013 at 23:40

Certainly I would love to see the real professor someday, rather than a metaphorical image. So far, my thoughts on the professor are very confounding! He is certainly very elusive… And also… wait a minute, is the professor fishing for compliments?! I think the professor is a little vain ;)

      • 44 Professor VJ Duke September 12, 2013 at 12:57

 Maybe you’ve got something there!

  9. 45 sknicholls September 11, 2013 at 21:12

The professor has a dual identity then, I suppose. I would want to know if there is a Ms. Professor or do you prefer to operate alone?

    • 46 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:10

Not at all, not at all. I’m VJ Duke.

A Ms. Professor? Hmm… The professor works completely alone–usually.

  10. 47 Nancy Loderick September 11, 2013 at 17:55

    Well professor, why not?????

    Nancy
P.S. I love your use of tags – blatherings! I bet you are the only WordPress blogger, heck even the only blogger who has used that tag. :)

    • 48 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:09

Why not what? Excuse the professorish mind!

:D Thank you! The professor does take pride in choosing his tags. Such a vexing pastime it is too.

  11. 49 technophile9 September 11, 2013 at 15:36

This was very interesting! If I have interpreted the professor smiley properly, you have a moustache? No offence meant. :P

    • 50 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:19

Glad you enjoyed it! The professor thought it would clear some things up. :) Yes, and a top hat, and beard, but do you believe the smiley? (No offense ever taken!!!)

      • 51 Susan P September 11, 2013 at 16:30

I’m fairly certain that the photo has all of the answers to the questions about the Professor that have not yet been answered if only we stare at it for long enough.

      • 52 Susan P September 11, 2013 at 16:32

Smilies can be two-faced. Yes, indeed. One must always expect them to be up to some sort of mayburnit shenanigans.

      • 53 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:37

I think you’re right, Susan! (But I do believe it would even confuse the professor–badly!)

 Good point! They are the worst of enemies. Now, a Daddy Salami smiley would be interesting…wouldn’t it?

      • 54 Susan P September 11, 2013 at 20:41

Oh. Dear. I wonder if it’s anything like his…laugh…

      • 55 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:14

Would be very scary. How would you describe DS’s laugh? I’m really not sure myself.

  12. 56 Jackie September 11, 2013 at 15:27

This post hasn’t changed my opinion at all! I think you and your blog are fantastic. Do I want or need to know about the Professor? Naw – a little mystery is a good thing. I also love the Professorish smiley – it suits you perfectly! :-D

    • 57 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:18

Very relieved to hear that! And the professor is honored!

:D The professor is a mystery–which is good. I’m glad that mystery can be appreciated!

(The smiley is also wearing a white suit. It’s hard to tell, though.)

  13. 58 ladycheetah7 September 11, 2013 at 15:20

Ok. I was hoping to see pictures of your office at somewhere university (smile) but those who have a problem with what you call yourself are purposely ignoring the creative mess they made in their own lives AND apparently your title holds merit; otherwise they wouldn’t focus so hard on you.
    PS – cool picture.

    • 59 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:16

:D A very good point, Lady!!! But, you know, the professor does have an office…

Thank you. It took too much time!

  14. 60 Simply skeptical September 11, 2013 at 14:59

Thank you PROFESSOR for clearing up such a vexing dilemma! Nevertheless, your obvious wisdom far exceeds your title. :-)

    • 61 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:15

You are way too kind! One thing we can be sure of: the professor is professorish in the greatest way.

  15. 62 MikeW September 11, 2013 at 14:45

Well, “Dead Poet’s Society” rests on the notion that a Professor is one who helps trapped people escape from institutions.

    • 63 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:15

Ah, an intriguing comment–as always. What is ‘Dead Poet’s Society’? Sounds risky. And I do think I like this definition!

      • 64 MikeW September 11, 2013 at 18:08

book and movie…movie with Robin Williams…maybe you should review it on PL!

      • 65 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:15

Ooo, thanks for the idea! The professor is always in need of them. I’ll take a look at it.

  16. 66 krugthethinker September 11, 2013 at 14:41

I always like your answers to vexing questions! I used to be a teacher at a university (when I was in grad school), but I did not get to call myself a professor, so that is further proof that the common definitions of professors need expanding!

    • 67 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:14

Thank you! Hope it wasn’t too professorish. :)

I think they do too. Maybe this professor will redefine the definition? (You should have called yourself a professor.) :D

  17. 68 Lisa Yow-Williams September 11, 2013 at 14:30

Everyone is bright enough to instruct others in at least one subject, officially or unofficially. I’m the Professor of Nagging to one student, my husband, or so he would say. What is your best subject?

    • 69 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:13

 That hilarious! Well… See? I have trouble coming up with one. Professorishness wouldn’t count, would it?

      How about…throwing knives?

      • 70 Susan P September 11, 2013 at 16:34

        Duck~!

    • 71 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:38

 The professor is too sweet to throw at people–especially the dear PLF!

      • 72 Lisa Yow-Williams September 11, 2013 at 17:52

Knife throwing counts as long as you haven’t impaled anyone lately. That would call your expertise into question and be painful. :)

      • 73 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:15

        I haven’t! Promise professorishly! I think it would…

  18. 74 deanthefish September 11, 2013 at 13:44

    Yes, I say… why V.J. and WHY Duke? ? ? ? ?

    • 75 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:12

Well, Mr. Fish, that’s my name. :)

      • 76 deanthefish September 11, 2013 at 18:18

        What an obvious evasion…

      • 77 deanthefish September 11, 2013 at 18:18

        tsk tsk

  19. 78 FictionFan September 11, 2013 at 13:30

The Professor is, and will always remain, an enigma! Which is very cool…

    • 79 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:12

:D  Unless the PLF ever meets him someday…

      • 80 FictionFan September 11, 2013 at 16:23

We should be so lucky… :D

(Though we will be meeting, of course, when we dance…)

      • 81 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:38

Oh no, the professor would be so lucky! ;)

True. But you may forget about that in a couple of weeks…

      • 82 FictionFan September 11, 2013 at 19:50

        I very much doubt that I will… ;)

      • 83 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 23:16

        Oh dear!

  20. 84 The Dancing Rider September 11, 2013 at 12:56

The professor smiley is ingenious! I think you *are* a cosmic professor, as illustrated by the photos which accompany this particular blathering. Sort of a PL Doctor Who, if you will. The PL denizens reflect so many aspects of life in general, don’t they?! :) I think the Professor should remain a mystery, always. After all, you write the script!

    • 85 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:12

:D Many thanks! And yes they do!

 And the professor is a mystery. But a cool one, I hope.

  21. 86 L. Marie September 11, 2013 at 11:57

Do you believe that the Punchy Landers (and I can’t help thinking of Daddy Salami in particular), are growing in wisdom or foolishness?
    Love the professor smiley.

    • 87 Professor VJ Duke September 11, 2013 at 16:11

      Thank you!

Well, the PL’ers…it really depends. Personally, I think Merlin is foolish, and Prince Beef, and Schwarz. Now, DS…I’m not sure. What do you think overall?

      • 88 L. Marie September 12, 2013 at 18:16

Daddy Salami is always wise. And ruthless. :-)

      • 89 Professor VJ Duke September 12, 2013 at 18:29

Very well put. Especially, if DS is listening!
