Blatherings: New Machines…and a Painting…

The beast has been replaced, but it still lives. Here’s the old, vexing beast:

DSC00190

And its rare growth–which caused its death:

DSC00189

Anyway, the beast has been replaced with this:

DSC00191

It’s very fast, and I think it very professorish, don’t you?

So, PF, do you prefer Windows or Macs, and why?

For the professor, a Mac was very logical. (Rest assured, this professor does not always make the logical choice.)

But there’s one disturbing thing about the new computer. Why does the professor’s apple have bite out of it? And who bit it? Not sure why you would use a half-eaten apple as a logo.

DSC00188

And now, a disturbing picture. (No, the beast’s growth does not count, because I’ve already showed that in its full hideousness.)

What’s disturbing about this picture is that the professor actually painted it.

Odd, isn’t it?

Did you really?! You are so talented! I love to paint, but mostly do abstract stuff. Still learning to draw, or to be comfortable with the way I draw! I have a Mac, and I loooove it. However! I would never have been converted from PC to Mac without the gentle prodding of my husband, who knows about Things Technological. Even my parents got Macs before I did. And thus I felt it was time to jump on the bandwagon! Every time I see that Apple, I think of the Beatles’ Apple Records, which featured an unbitten apple, and then I think of Magritte. Sucj is the Krugish mind!

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke October 25, 2013 at 13:53

 I fear the professor was cheating just a bit.

Macs are awesome. I think Eric did the right thing. :)

The Krugish mind is very interesting!

    Hey Professor,

Very scary looking! I think the beast is roaming your house at night when you are asleep.

    Nancy

    • 4 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 23:11

Now I’m real scared. Must keep the katana close, right?

      • 5 Nancy Loderick October 25, 2013 at 18:36

What’s the expression — keep your friends close, but your enemies closer? :)

      • 6 Professor VJ Duke October 25, 2013 at 20:38

        It is! And very true.

  3. 7 Holistic Wayfarer October 24, 2013 at 16:29

The creature that replaced the beast looks wicked and outright fearful with those turquoise, magenta spikes.

    • 8 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 16:36

You’re right! I never thought about it before. Very scary. But it only shows its mean side every so often.

  4. 9 technophile9 October 24, 2013 at 16:24

I have never used a Mac, but I think I would like them as I love Apple. Also, the giraffe looks excellent. :)

    • 10 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 16:36

      I’m sure you’d love Macs.

Thank you! The professor did cheat a bit. :)

  5. 11 Hazy October 24, 2013 at 12:46

I’m a Windows gal myself. I’m more used to using it and Macs are more expensive here. (Though I do have a couple of iPods that I love to bits.)

Someone got hungry while assembling the machine, taking a bite of the apple, perhaps. And may I say, despite the apple biting, the professor’s new machine looks mighty spiffy!

That painting looks very nice! Well done, professor.

    • 12 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 13:41

The professor doesn’t have an iPod. I bet they’re nice, though.

 I think you’re right, and thank you! It’s definitely professorish, for sure! (I like spiffy.)

      It’s horrid up close.

      • 13 Hazy October 25, 2013 at 16:10

Yes, they are, especially the Touch one. :)

        Spiffily professorish indeed!

I think not. Is it? But paintings are meant to be admired from a distance, aren’t they? So I guess that’s fine if it is. :D

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke October 25, 2013 at 17:05

        Tempting!

        :D

A very good point! Makes the professor feel splendid.

      • 15 Hazy October 27, 2013 at 13:49

      • 16 Professor VJ Duke October 28, 2013 at 12:05

“Why does the professor’s apple have bite out of it? And who bit it? Not sure why you would use a half-eaten apple as a logo.”

I read somewhere that the designer of the Apple logo put a bite on it so it wouldn’t be mistaken as a cherry…. (something like that). Congrats for having a new computer. Great picture too. didn’t know you’re an artist… hahahaha!

    • 18 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 13:39

But wouldn’t it be better as a cherry? The professor definitely thinks so.

Thank you! The professor is a professorish artist.

  7. 19 jennifermzeiger October 24, 2013 at 02:36

Never thought about the Mac’s apple. Who did take the bite out of the apple?

    • 20 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 13:38

It’s a scary thought. What are the possibilities?

  8. 21 Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister October 24, 2013 at 00:39

An Artist? A triple threat I fear, professor. Oozing abilities…

    • 22 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 01:40

Oh no, it was a cheating painting, if you know what I mean. The professor could never draw or paint to save his professorish self.

      • 23 Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister October 24, 2013 at 01:42

I see. The professor is good at taking instruction then. :)

      • 24 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 13:36

        Only sometimes. :)

      • 25 Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister October 24, 2013 at 19:46

        Haha! ;)

      • 26 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 23:17

  9. 27 The Dancing Rider October 23, 2013 at 21:02

Unknown about the apple bite. I’ve heard lots of good things about Macs. Especially for art – and your painting is really cool! :)

    • 28 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:41

Yeah, strange. (The professor was cheating! )

      • 29 The Dancing Rider October 23, 2013 at 21:43

        Oh, I’m shocked! ;-)

      • 30 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:45

Well the professor is shocking, it’s said.

  10. 31 sonya solomonovich October 23, 2013 at 20:35

    The giraffe looks great, professor!
Personally, I’ve always used pc’s since I find macs obscure and incomprehensible.

    • 32 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:41

      Aw, thanks!

I could see where you see that. But aren’t Macs more professorish?

      • 33 sonya solomonovich October 24, 2013 at 18:30

They must be since the professor now owns a mac ;)

      • 34 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 23:06

        Amazing how that happens…

  11. 35 lifeconfusions October 23, 2013 at 17:06

And just so you know I’ve nominated you for versatile blogger award. I hope you’ll accept. Because you are the one of the most versatile bloggers I’ve found here.

    • 36 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:36

Thanks so much! The professor will be over to check it out. (I’m probably the most professorish blogger you’ve found.)

      • 37 lifeconfusions October 25, 2013 at 04:13

you are welcome to anytime :)

      • 38 Professor VJ Duke October 25, 2013 at 13:50

  12. 39 lifeconfusions October 23, 2013 at 16:21

Hey you have the same old beast as mine… !
I had the same thing before it got replaced by my Dell laptop.

    P.S I like new the background! :)

    • 40 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:35

Oh dear, were you cursed with that too? HOw horrid. (Laptop’s better isn’t it?)

      Thanks! It’s Punchyish, you know.

      • 41 lifeconfusions October 25, 2013 at 04:12

Yeah I was, but it wasn’t THAT bad though :P
But yeah, laptop is better :)

      • 42 Professor VJ Duke October 25, 2013 at 13:50

        Haha!

        Only sometimes!

  13. 43 Painting Pundit October 23, 2013 at 16:12

Mac all the way, with or without the bite. Much less virus danger! Very giraffe-ish giraffe!

    • 44 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:34

Very good point. And they’re cooler! It is definitely!

  14. 45 Lana October 23, 2013 at 16:03

I love the creator of the half-bitten apple and some of his products but not the iPad. I would purchase your giraffe painting instead – exquisite!

    • 46 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:34

Ooo, really? Interesting. Is the iPad smelly?

Honored is this professor! But it’s not that exquisite up close!

  15. 47 L. Marie October 23, 2013 at 15:59

My first laptop ages ago was a Mac. Eventually I’ll get another. I went the PC route because they were cheaper.
    What a lovely painting!

    • 48 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:33

Macs seem great for the arts, but you can’t beat microsoft word!

      Thank you. It’s professorish.

  16. 49 Jackie October 23, 2013 at 14:31

I don’t know why the apple has a bite taken out if it but it’s on my iPhone too! I was just looking at it the other day and thinking it was strange. Perhaps there is a story behind it that would put it in context. *shrugs*

Your painting is very good! Thanks for sharing more of your talents. 8-)

    • 50 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:17

Yes, very dadblame strange, for sure. I hope there is. But where could we find it, do you suppose?

No talent at all, I assure you. Just a professorish picture.

      • 51 Jackie October 23, 2013 at 18:12

I found it on the interwebs! Here is the story of the the apple logo. 8-)

        http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/06/opinion/apple-logo

Not to argue or anything but I think you have talent and there’s nothing you can say to change my stance on that.

      • 52 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:40

Thanks bunches, Jackie! Will take a look here. I hope it has something to do with worms.

Oh no, no talent–especially in painting or drawing. The professor is very uncreative too.

      • 53 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:54

Well, the professor is sort of grossed out now. It’s his bite, huh?

      • 54 Jackie October 23, 2013 at 22:00

The creator of the logo said it’s like that so you won’t confuse the apple for a cherry. Sounds pretty sketchy if you ask me!

      • 55 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:03

It does. But it is kind of neat. All they need is a worm.

      • 56 Jackie October 23, 2013 at 22:10

Not sure they want to go there seeing as worms can cause so many problems.

      • 57 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 01:36

Very true. But it would be a bit neat, I think.

  17. 58 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 14:17

Wow. Look at you with your artistic gift. Was this paint by number? Jk. I wish I could paint. Draw? A little bit.
As for the computer, I have always worked with windows although I have heard Mac is much better. When I get out of debt, I might take a leap and purchase a Mac.
Also, you are assuming the apple was bitten when it may have been carved out. Hmmmmmmmmmm….

    • 59 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:16

It was! Very intuitive, Lady! So does the professor. We should take a class together.

I think you’ll love a Mac. Just make sure to get one that hasn’t been chewed on.

By the professor? How could you think such a thing?!

      • 60 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 15:19

Like I said before you are deceptively clever…..
        ;-)

      • 61 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:22

The professor isn’t too clever. I think he’s too sweet to be clever, really.

      • 62 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 17:03

        Deceptively Clever. Sounds about right.

      • 63 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:36

        Who, the professor? Dadblamery!

      • 64 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 21:38

        Professor Who?

      • 65 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:42

 Let’s not go there…

      • 66 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 21:44

        laughing

      • 67 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:45

  18. 68 Angeline M October 23, 2013 at 14:16

I’ve never tried a Mac, so I’ve got no answers for your there. That was a pretty hideous growth on the beast though, so best you booted it out the door.
I love the giraffe! You are a professor of many hidden talents, slowly being revealed.

    • 69 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:14

Are you tempted to try a Mac? It was horrid. What a time getting booted, though!

Thank you! But it’s really a twerdlit. Not many talents, I fear. Just a lot of professorishness.

  19. 70 Kayla October 23, 2013 at 13:55

I have worked with Macs and PCs, Macs are just prettier! But I don’t have concrete reasoning for going one way or another, I am far from a computer genius, but this is something I have been debating myself, because Macs are soooo expensive.

I’m glad you got a new computer!

    • 71 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:11

They are much prettier! A very good point. (Except for the apple logo. :) ) They are, but they’re perfect for movies and audio stuff.

Thank you! Wouldn’t you say they’re professorish too?

  20. 72 FictionFan October 23, 2013 at 13:46

Very stylish! I’m a Windows girl myself – never tried a Mac. I hate to say it, but I supect the missing chunk of apple may be caused by Giant Worms…!!

The painting is very  – what a talented Professor!

    What don’t we know?

    • 73 Jazzy Couldren October 23, 2013 at 14:06

Hey, don’t you believe him. He don’t paint that well. He ain’t manly enough.

      • 74 deanthefish October 23, 2013 at 14:08

Don’t be so gullible. “What don’t we know?” implies: “What are you lying about?”

      • 75 FictionFan October 23, 2013 at 14:32

Oh, it’s always sad to see such jealousy…

      • 76 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 14:40

Maybe the two of you should have some sort of contest to sort it out.

    • 77 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:09

The professor has been a windows man too–until recently. Audio engineering and movies are much better suited for Macios.

Do you think? It makes sense… Giant worms will haunt me forever, I fear!

No, not at all. Up close it’s hideous.

      About what?

      • 78 FictionFan October 23, 2013 at 17:24

You should have got a Kindle instead.

        Only the dead ones…

        So is the Mona Lisa!

I don’t know. That’s why I asked. (Hint: your tags, dear Prof, your tags!)

      • 79 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:38

The professor isn’t even sure what a kindle looks like. Some new dadblamery, I think.

        *gulp*

It is? Interesting! The professor always knew he was a bit like Leonardo da Vincio!

 Sorry! Umm… Don’t know about the professor. :D

      • 80 FictionFan October 23, 2013 at 23:28

        Kindles are very, very

        Better than DiCaprio I suppose…

        No, we don’t…

      • 81 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 01:38

        I guess they could be.

DiCaprio who? The professor doesn’t know a fool called DiCaprio.

Which is good. Details are scary.

  21. 82 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 13:44

I really could have lived the rest of my life without seeing that *shudder* growth. It should be rated PG-13. I do, however, like that giraffe. Is that giraffe winking? If so, that is disturbing. Some of the trees are a bit disturbing, too. :D

I think I would like a Mac, but I think I’d be looking for one that no one had chewed on. ;)

    • 83 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 14:21

Susan, if the giraffe is winking it might be a subliminal message of the Professor’s vanity that he purposely hides from us.

      • 84 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 14:39

I hadn’t considered that. Hmmmm… You may be right. Do you think that he masquerades as Manly man?

      • 85 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 14:43

Um, Manly Man. No. Mainly because the personas are way too different. Manly Man is very laid back and PVJ is more in the “conservative” side. However, I was wondering about Dean the Fish….hmmm.

      • 86 Susan P October 23, 2013 at 14:51

That, too, has crossed my mind. And I want to know how all of that blood got in the old PC.

      • 87 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:18

        Ooo, what blood?

      • 88 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:18

No, Mr. Fish is his own entity, I assure you.

Goodness! Next you’ll be wondering about Shnodgrate, Mic, and…Salami!

      • 89 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 15:25

Perhaps a you tube with you guys disguising yourselves may be in the works for a Punchy episode. As for Salami that crossed my mind but his propensity for evil is downright low. I think you have your limits. Then again, given the right circumstances and katana who knows…keeekeeeekeeee

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:30

In a video? But the professor is very sweet with his katana, killing only those who deserve it.

      • 91 deanthefish October 23, 2013 at 15:12

What? You think I am the professor?? Very interesting, though I can’t assure you enough that I am most certainly, undoubtedly not. (not the professor that is)

      • 92 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 15:26

        Good times…lol

      • 93 deanthefish October 23, 2013 at 15:15

And of course, if we were the same, we couldn’t be commenting simultaneously as we are now ;)

      • 94 ladycheetah7 October 23, 2013 at 15:20

You know I thought about that too. Call me a cautious skeptic. ..lol
        ;-)

    • 95 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:08

Yes, awful. Sorry for showing it again. No, R or MA…

Not on purpose if it is, but if it is, it’s not my fault, surely. All the trees are disturbing, but it wasn’t my color scheme.

 Exactly! The professor got the chewed up version, dadblameit!

      • 96 Jazzy Couldren October 23, 2013 at 17:34

I’s too manly to be anyone but Manly Man.

      • 97 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:39

        Of course you are, babe!

  22. 98 deanthefish October 23, 2013 at 13:41

Welcome to the club Prof.! Apple-all-the-way.

As for the bite…. what is the only kind of apple that only has one bite???

    • 99 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:05

Thanks for the warm welcome, Mr. Fish.

I’m not sure. Is there an answer?

      • 100 deanthefish October 23, 2013 at 15:14

Yes: Poison apples. And the message of Mac is simple and subtle, albeit complicated. Try an apple and the “Windows user” part of you dies. Just scan you comments if you don’t believe me. Everybody either loves Mac or never had one.

  23. 101 Anja October 23, 2013 at 13:34

YES a MAC!!!!! Wonderful choice….now for the bite out of your apple….this I don’t believe has ever been fully answered. I do know Janoff has often skirted the issue saying things like the reason for the bite may be a let down….but it was done so people didn’t think it was a cherry. :) Who knows….
Congrats on the painting….you never spoke of your art skills before. I am still waiting on your poetry.
How do YOU like your amazing MAC?

    • 102 Anja October 23, 2013 at 13:35

oh and nice trees….I see….in your yard I am guessing? lol

      • 103 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 15:05

You are right! It’s a nice cold, wet, and dreary day here.

      • 104 Anja October 23, 2013 at 15:34

We had that yesterday……I look for all kinds of details in pictures. :)

      • 105 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:32

Which is a good thing to do. You might see a tassie devil one day.

      • 106 Anja October 23, 2013 at 21:57

In your home? You would either live in a zoo or Australia then.

      • 107 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:02

No, I have a friend who ships them to me.

      • 108 Anja October 23, 2013 at 22:03

and you do what with them?

      • 109 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:05

        Hehehe! Tis a professorish secret.

      • 110 Anja October 23, 2013 at 22:05

Will have to keep my eyes looking even harder for details…….

      • 111 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:07

        Yes!

      • 112 Anja October 23, 2013 at 22:08

I can do it…..I am good at that.

      • 113 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:09

That’s got to be it! Though it would be better if the computer was called a cherry. That’s precious.

 The painting is nothing special. The professor painted it about 100 years ago. And I’ve kept it because it’s professorish. My poetry would make you laugh me to scorn, I fear.

I love it! Super fast and super professorish!

      • 115 Anja October 23, 2013 at 15:33

100 years old? Well that is an antique!!!!!!! I would never laugh you to scorn….have I ever?

Ahhhh enjoy the Mac and welcome to the Mac world. :)

      • 116 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 21:31

It is! Well, you’re quite uncooperative over the romantic stuff…

        Ah, thanks!!!

      • 117 Anja October 23, 2013 at 21:58

I am just as uncooperative over it as you are with me…over it…..

      • 118 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:02

But the professor knows the truth.

      • 119 Anja October 23, 2013 at 22:05

I know you know the truth…you just like to act like it is not the truth.

      • 120 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:07

No, the professor knows the truth.

      • 121 Anja October 23, 2013 at 22:07

That is exactly what I said.

      • 122 Professor VJ Duke October 23, 2013 at 22:09

        And I said it again.

      • 123 Anja October 23, 2013 at 22:10

        and I agreed again….

      • 124 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 01:36

        Goodness me!

      • 125 Anja October 24, 2013 at 01:41

        :D

      • 126 Professor VJ Duke October 24, 2013 at 13:35
