A very enjoyable blurb! The idea of a video ripping is very awesome and quite professorish. Go team!

I’ve never read the book, not sure if I ever will. The argument regarding the plane crash and where were the adults sound valid.

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 15:09

      Many thanks, Hazy!!!

      Yeah, there’s a few inconsistencies…

  2. 3 krugthethinker December 6, 2013 at 02:18

Hahaha! My older brother traumatized me with stories from this book, so I shall never read it! But I enjoyed your blurb! Seems like maybe they should have made it…a boat crash?

    • 4 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:19

Yes! That would have worked better, I think. But still….

  3. 5 The Dancing Rider December 5, 2013 at 22:17

I enjoyed your honest blurb much more than my memory of reading this book years ago. I shan’t read it again. Ever! I do remember thinking that boys will be boys — just as people will be people — in certain situations.

    • 6 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:17

Do you suppose girls would have done something differently?

      • 7 The Dancing Rider December 6, 2013 at 14:15

I think females can be very mean as well.

      • 8 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:19

        Maybe even meaner than males!

      • 9 The Dancing Rider December 6, 2013 at 23:41

        They can be!

      • 10 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 04:12

        Ooo!

  4. 11 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 5, 2013 at 20:30

I have mixed feelings about this book. I always felt bad for the boy named Piggy. What possessed the author to give that boy the name. Don’t answer, it’s a rhetorical question.

Just thinking through the book… There’s a lot I enjoy about this story. I guess I’m in the minority. I’m actually glad it came up in your post today.

I appreciated the photo story today, as well, Mr. Warren. Some beautiful images being used.

    • 12 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:16

I think Piggy’s a great name for a boy. You should name one of your cats after him. (If you don’t have cats…then I don’t know.)

I’ve never read it, you know.

      Truly!

      • 13 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 6, 2013 at 04:24

        No cats…a pug, Oscar.

Yeah, which isn’t why I’m engaging you in any sort of conversation. ;)

        Truly.

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:14

That’s right! I should’ve remembered that…I think we discussed that before.

Well, you’ve always been a wicked sort of Audith.

        That’s what I said.

      • 15 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 6, 2013 at 20:08

We did, and you offered to let him hunt squirrels if I remember correctly. :)

Noeth I’ve notith, tis thoueth’s role!! (I just chopped that up, but you know what I mean. Audisms can get stetchy when trying to reach back so far in the English language.) (Must work on it so I can really surprise you.)

I said it with more spunk and a smirk.

      • 16 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 20:32

That’s right! What a memory, my dear!

 I think it was gloriously said!

I said it with a puff of smoke.

      • 17 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 6, 2013 at 20:41

I have a great memory. I’m pretty awesome that way, Duke.
It makes my day that you approve! :D

I’ll say it in a whisper, while chewing the end of your reading glasses, and waving your smoke away.

      • 18 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 04:09

        Yes, Audith is rather awesome.

        :D

I don’t have reading glasses, madam!

      • 19 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 7, 2013 at 06:03

:D :D It’s so easy to admit that, isn’t it?

Yes you do, I wouldn’t be chewing on a bit of them if you didn’t, dear!

      • 20 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 20:27

It is! In truth, it is true.

Dear nothing! I don’t have them. Twain stole them.

      • 21 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 7, 2013 at 21:42

        So true…

No you stole them from him. I’ll get them back to him, straight away.

      • 22 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 14:58

And then bring him to the professorish abode.

      • 23 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 9, 2013 at 18:12

So he gets to visit then, I see. :lol:I’ll have to ask him first, he’s very busy.

      • 24 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 20:14

Definitely not too busy for me, dadblameit!

      • 25 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 9, 2013 at 20:17

        Touchy ;) *belly laugh*

      • 26 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 20:30

        But it’s true!

      • 27 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 9, 2013 at 22:05

Ok its true. I’ll back away.

      • 28 Professor VJ Duke December 10, 2013 at 14:30

        ‘Cause I’ve go sharp teeth.

      • 29 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 10, 2013 at 15:17

No only because I know what he means to you. Your teeth don’t scare me.

      • 30 Professor VJ Duke December 10, 2013 at 17:52

        Even the sharp ones?

      • 31 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 11, 2013 at 02:27

Yes even those sharp ones right there…

      • 32 Professor VJ Duke December 11, 2013 at 18:02

        *closes mouth*

      • 33 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 11, 2013 at 20:32

        (Show them again)

      • 34 Professor VJ Duke December 11, 2013 at 21:48

        No.

      • 35 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 11, 2013 at 22:46

Now I have a pouty face. Thanks a lot!

      • 36 Professor VJ Duke December 12, 2013 at 14:40

I love pouty faces. It looks good on you.

      • 37 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 12, 2013 at 15:21

        Thank you!

      • 38 Professor VJ Duke December 12, 2013 at 15:33

        :D

      • 39 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 12, 2013 at 15:35

        ;)

      • 40 Professor VJ Duke December 12, 2013 at 23:30

        :P

      • 41 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 13, 2013 at 03:07

Didn’t we already talk about this stucking out tongues business…we’re circling again, Duke.

      • 42 Professor VJ Duke December 13, 2013 at 15:45

You’re right. I should use this

      • 43 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 13, 2013 at 16:49

Wow! Can I put a bow on your horns?

      • 44 Professor VJ Duke December 14, 2013 at 00:26

        I don’t have horns!

      • 45 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 14, 2013 at 00:29

        I beg to differ…

      • 46 Professor VJ Duke December 14, 2013 at 00:35

How can you possibly do that?

      • 47 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 14, 2013 at 00:38

        I don’t know I’ll find a way.

      • 48 Professor VJ Duke December 14, 2013 at 00:52

        All ways are my ways.

      • 49 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister December 14, 2013 at 04:06

        I like that

      • 50 Professor VJ Duke December 15, 2013 at 21:47

        :D

  5. 51 Sonya Solomonovich December 5, 2013 at 19:22

A jolly good ripping, professor. I was fortunate enough to avoid reading this dadblamery. Though I have read a very good essay by William Golding entitled “Thinking as a Hobby.” You would probably find it very professorish.

    • 52 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:12

Does it make one think excessively?

  6. 53 Susan P December 5, 2013 at 19:19

Lord of the Flies was one of the creepier books I read in 20th Century British Lit when I was in college. It was a good rip, but I think it could be a little longer. :D

    • 54 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:12

How much longer would you say?

      • 55 Susan P December 6, 2013 at 13:41

three or four minutes. Probably three-ish.

      • 56 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:19

        Well, today’s was four-ish…

      • 57 Susan P December 6, 2013 at 17:53

Today’s was awesome. Five minutes is about all I can sit still for. But when it’s PL stuff I can extend it if it is substantial.

      • 58 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 18:20

Very nice of you to say, Susan. The Mr. R interview was way too long.

      • 59 Susan P December 6, 2013 at 19:10

It was…but then you were dealing with Mr. R. He’s a bit of a fuss-budget.

      • 60 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 20:28

I love that word! And, yes, he is.

      • 61 Susan P December 7, 2013 at 16:53

        Can it be cured?

      • 62 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 20:43

How would one go about doing it?

      • 63 Susan P December 7, 2013 at 20:49

OH, now you are talking about taking on a long-term and tedious project.

      • 64 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 14:55

        I’d rather not, then.

      • 65 Susan P December 9, 2013 at 15:19

        I thought not.
        :D

      • 66 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 15:28

        :D

  7. 67 Anja December 5, 2013 at 17:24

Ahhhh the one book that caused me to get in a debate (argument) with my 8th grade teacher. Ugh do not like this book. But loved the video.

    • 68 Professor VJ Duke December 5, 2013 at 18:00

What don’t you like about the book? Just a curious professor…

      • 69 Anja December 5, 2013 at 22:59

It just seemed illogical on so many levels….so I am to believe that these boys from a school were being evacuated from Britain when shot down and happen to land on some tropical island…WHERE…..seriously?
I get all the symbolisms, Biblical and not…the conch, society and blah blah but the book was just insane to me.
I did enjoy Simon….but other than that hated it. I remember having to write a paper about it and went on a rant about everything I found wrong with the book.

      • 70 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:18

It was a professorish island, I’ll bet!

There’s Biblical symbolisms? I’ve never read it.

        Did Simon perish?

      • 71 Anja December 6, 2013 at 10:42

Uhh does Simon perish? He only gets torn apart by the boys hands and teeth when they are in some strange trance controlled by Ralph. All Simon was trying to do is show them that the parachute, was just a parachute not something beastly.
Biblical…SOME connect the island to the Garden of Eden and the devil is there, blah blah blah. Some even try to draw weak connections between Simon and Jesus.

      • 72 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:16

Very dadblame interesting… Now, I do think getting torn apart is kind of cool…

      • 73 Anja December 6, 2013 at 22:40

        uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

      • 74 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 04:11

        Clearing your throat?

      • 75 Anja December 7, 2013 at 05:03

Not because I just tore into someone…..literally.

      • 76 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 20:26

I think whoever it was probably deserved it, though.

      • 77 Anja December 7, 2013 at 20:27

        No katanas were used.

      • 78 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 20:45

        Fists?

      • 79 Anja December 7, 2013 at 21:21

        No fists

      • 80 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 14:56

        Boring fight, then, I suppose.

      • 81 Anja December 9, 2013 at 18:16

        Probably on your terms, yes.

      • 82 Professor VJ Duke December 9, 2013 at 20:14

Not on yours, I suppose, though.

      • 83 Anja December 9, 2013 at 20:42

        I suppose no, right?

      • 84 Professor VJ Duke December 10, 2013 at 14:26

        Yes, I would imagine.

      • 85 Anja December 10, 2013 at 14:46

        Well good then.

      • 86 Professor VJ Duke December 10, 2013 at 17:49

        :D

  8. 87 Diana December 5, 2013 at 17:16

Reblogged this on Part Time Monster and commented:
    This. Is. So. Good.

    • 88 Professor VJ Duke December 5, 2013 at 18:01

      The professor is honored, Diana!

    • 89 Diana December 5, 2013 at 22:37

And this is why we need characters like Katniss Everdeen and Lyra Belacqua.

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:17

Who are they? The professor is afeared to say he’s never heard of them!

      • 91 Diana December 6, 2013 at 15:51

Katniss is The Hunger Games’s protagonist, and Lyra is the little girl from the Golden Compass series who sets off to find her father and then kill god. I was looking at the discussion about what girls would do given the island, and I think we’re finally moving past that image of girls in young adult fiction-which is a very, very good thing.

      • 92 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:28

Indeed. But what do you think would happen? Would the outcome have been different if they had been girls?

      • 93 Diana December 6, 2013 at 18:02

I think it would depend on who wrote it, honestly.

      • 94 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 18:21

That’s true. If I wrote it everybody would probably perish.

  9. 95 FictionFan December 5, 2013 at 16:35

 This book always makes me think of the good old saying ‘Boys will be boys!’ If there had been girls on the island, it would all have been so different… ;)

    Nice rip!

    • 96 Professor VJ Duke December 5, 2013 at 18:00

Really? How so, madam?! I must needs know the particulars.

:D The professor likes ripping, but all credit must go to Nick Warren!

      • 97 FictionFan December 5, 2013 at 19:12

Well, girls would have insisted on keeping up certain standards of hygiene and cleanliness. And a judicious eye-rolling and eyebrow-raising would have been employed when the boys started their warpaint and savagery games…

The Professor would have been so popular on the island! His Giant Worm-hunting skills would have provided a much-needed source of protein and avoided all that messy pig-sticking…in fact, I think we need a Punchy skit based on Lord of the Flies. I’d love to see what recipes Ruber could come up with…

      • 98 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:11

I’m not sure how cleanliness would be possible on an island without showers. Warpaint? I’d wear some–okay, a lot! (The girls would have died, I think.)

 Now that is an idea, FEF! I shall think on it. (It’s not usually safe to eat the worms…)

      • 99 FictionFan December 6, 2013 at 15:07

 I love that first sentence so much – it’s so…so…American!!

Girls are tougher than you think – we’re not all Beckys, you know!

(Does the Professor speak from experience? ;) )

      • 100 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:25

I think you’re laughing me to scorn. What’s wrong with that sentence? Makes complete sense to me, dadblameit!

Well, this professor would probably dispose of a Becky if he was unfortunate enough to be on an island with her… But that goes for Jane and Lizio too! (And Darby.)

Oh no! That’s what the masters say.

      • 101 FictionFan December 6, 2013 at 17:22

It’s just so…American…to think that it’s impossible to be clean without showers. Half the world condemned to perpetual stinkiness! I can only imagine the size of the Prof’s backpack when he sets off for a wilderness trip – portable shower, washing machine and dryer…

Becky – yes, but I think the Professor would find Lizio would put up a fight!

        Bet Ruber would disagree…

      • 102 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 18:19

Not at all! The professor travels lightly, you should know. So how do you keep clean without a shower? A waterfall, maybe…

But in the end, she would fall. (I can hear the VM saying that.)

 You hate Ruber, I think.

      • 103 FictionFan December 6, 2013 at 20:00

A waterfall – now you’re getting into the spirit!

Perhaps she would…or perhaps not! It depends on whether she’s been practising her kick-boxing…

No, no! Just his cooking… ;)

      • 104 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 20:31

Would never think FEF was so adventurous!

 The professor didn’t know she kick-boxed!

        Me too…

      • 105 FictionFan December 6, 2013 at 22:01

Me? Goodness, no! I won’t go anywhere that doesn’t have access to a hairdryer and a chocloate shop!

She doesn’t get much time for the kick-boxing – what with the limbo-dancing and all…

      • 106 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 04:11

A hairdryer? Methinks they are outdated. You should get a buzz cut.

        That sounds very freaky…

      • 107 FictionFan December 7, 2013 at 18:26

Would a buzz cut go with a ballgown? Hmm…you’ve been taking sartorial advice from MM1 again, haven’t you?

And not at all easy to do while wearing a corset…

      • 108 Professor VJ Duke December 7, 2013 at 20:44

Well, I’m not sure what a ballgown looks like, so I can’t say for sure.

        Hmm?

    • 109 Susan P December 5, 2013 at 19:16

I dunno…I know some women who are completely way ahead of some men I know when it comes to evil. Most of the men I know are straightforward and up front. Women can be much more devious.

      • 110 FictionFan December 5, 2013 at 19:18

        But still cleaner…

      • 111 Susan P December 5, 2013 at 19:20

You’re not talking about their mouths, though, right?

      • 112 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:11

        Cleaner?!

      • 113 FictionFan December 6, 2013 at 15:09

Definitely! It takes an army of women to ensure your average teenage boy stays clean… ;)

      • 114 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 16:25

It does? You’re making things up….

      • 115 FictionFan December 6, 2013 at 17:22

        Me? As if… ;)

      • 116 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 18:19

        I know you would!

      • 117 Jazzy Couldren December 6, 2013 at 01:01

It’s all cause none of them was manly.

  10. 118 L. Marie December 5, 2013 at 16:17

I greatly prefer the book blurb to the book. :-)

    • 119 Professor VJ Duke December 5, 2013 at 17:59

 Thank you, my dear! Any classics you’d like to see?

  11. 120 ladycheetah7 December 5, 2013 at 15:14

I so love these rips and the presentations are phenomenal. Quite original I would say.

    • 121 Professor VJ Duke December 5, 2013 at 17:58

Many thanks, Lady. The VoiceMaster can really sound professional, for sure. Any books that you’d like to see?

      • 122 ladycheetah7 December 5, 2013 at 18:05

At this time I am stuck reading the Charlamagne Pursuit and Emperor’s Tomb. If only I can get motivated to read them both. ..

      • 123 Professor VJ Duke December 5, 2013 at 18:33

Ooo, is it dreadfully boring? Perhaps you should read Ben-Hur. That will inspire you to continue reading the others.

      • 124 ladycheetah7 December 5, 2013 at 19:55

Lol! No. I go through the motions of reading, not reading, etc. As you very well know the beginning may be slow, it picks up speed and the end some how leaves you wanting. I guess know that I see this pattern I am dragging my feet.

      • 125 Professor VJ Duke December 6, 2013 at 04:13

The professor always finds the middle obnoxious, personally.

I have adopted the philosophy that if I am avoiding reading a book because it’s just not right for me, I send it back to the library unread. :D

Too late! I purchased these books already at Half Price Books some as cheap as $.99 – $6.00 so I aim to read my money’s worth.

That might be well into page 30… Start the fireplace and make some hot chocolate and get started! :D

Besides, I love Steve Berry’s books so I need to quit slacking and get to reading.

I used to buy books, but now I mostly borrow them from the library so I don’t feel any guilt if I take it back unread. I even cancelled a reserved on after I read some reviews online. The electronic age has its good moments.

Thank you, Jackie! Have you ever read the novel?

      • 133 Jackie December 5, 2013 at 21:56

Back in the day yeah but it didn’t really hold my attention.
