Tales of the Punchies—Fish Dinner

The Punchies (the ones responsible for making the land Punchy) were seated about the oak table, deep within their cave.

“I hope he gets back soon,” Arnold said gruffly.

“Me too, gentlemen,” Humphrey said.

“I’m starving,” Mitchum observed.

“Quite,” Kirk said. “Methinks I know what’s up and what’s down. Punchy Murdoch said to me, just a little bit ago (in the twilight moon), that the one for whom we waiteth shall come soon.”

“But, Kirk,” Arnold said, “it’s afternoon, so how could Punchy Murdoch have said anything to you in the twilight moon?”

“Yeah,” Mitchum said, glaring at Kirk happily.

Kirk was worried. “It happened—in my mind.”

That satisfied the Punchies.

A second or two passed.

“Gee, Kirk,” Arnold said. “I’m hungry.”

“Mr. Arnak,” Kirk said flippantly, “if you continue to whine, I shall give you a bad grade.”

This was an interest.

“In what?” Mitchum asked.

“The Punchy exam,” Kirk answered.

“Gentlemen,” Humphrey observed, “there’s no such thing.”

“I thought so!” Mitchum said.

“There is now,” Kirk answered. “It’s newly new. I just had speaks with Punchy Murdoch about it.”

“In the twilight moon?” Mitchum asked smartly.

Kirk looked shocked. “Actually, yes, Mr. Blue.”

Sylvester entered the room—with the Punchy dinner.

“What broughteth thou for eats?” Kirk asked.

Sylvester laid a fish on the table, and then sat.

“That’s too bad,” Kirk mumbled.

What is with the fish? Is it a peace offering so no one doubts Kirk? Btw, is Kirk a teacher? A punchy exam, really?!

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 21:51

No, Kirk isn’t at teacher. I think Sylvester brought if for supper. Would you take a Punchy exam?

  2. 3 Painting Pundit March 7, 2014 at 18:49

Was DS behind this fish thing? He’s always behind any dadblamery. Where’s Mr. Magi? He needs to investigate this fish thing. And what’s with the exam? Why threaten the poor PL’s? Haven’t they been through enough?

    • 4 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 21:22

I’m not sure. It would be perfectly possible that DS gave the fish to Sylvester. Mr. Magi is probably hibernating.

I know! Dreadfully wicked of Kirk. Do you think the P’s should refuse to take it?

      • 5 Painting Pundit March 8, 2014 at 00:28

Absolutely! They should stage a revolt!

      • 6 Professor VJ Duke March 8, 2014 at 20:52

        Ooo…I agree!

  3. 7 The Dancing Rider March 6, 2014 at 22:53

Smirk. Kirk’s “It happened — in my mind.” And the P’s are satisfied. ;-) These conversations are dadblamery! And confounding!

I don’t know what to think about that ending. The fish. Eek. I have an uneasy feeling, professor! Did Ruber supply it?!

    • 8 krugthethinker March 7, 2014 at 05:36

Yes, this is also my primary concern! Ruber’s fish would be…interesting. Perhaps it was a blowfish?! Or…still alive??

      • 9 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 14:02

Ooo, what is a blowfish? (Hi, Krug!)

      • 10 The Dancing Rider March 7, 2014 at 14:25

        EEEEEK! ‘It’s alive, it’s alive!”

      • 11 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 20:57

    • 12 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:55

It is! They must be dull to believe that. Or they’re scared to push further. I wouldn’t have been satisfied, would you have?

I’m not sure where Sylvester got it from. I have an uneasy feeling too. Wouldn’t touch it!

      • 13 The Dancing Rider March 7, 2014 at 14:23

No, professor, I would not have been satisfied!

And that fish! I wouldn’t even want to look at that dadblamed thing!

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 20:57

        Yes, yes!

 Me neither. Not a fan of fish when cooked!

  4. 15 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister March 6, 2014 at 20:25

One shouldn’t be kept waiting for dinner, Duke. Whining is unacceptable, isn’t it?

    • 16 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:53

Yes, it is. Kirk should have accepted it. I mean, Sylvester worked hard to get it, right?

      • 17 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister March 7, 2014 at 17:40

Yes, Kirk was very rude. Sylvester should find someone more worthy of his offerings.

      • 18 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 21:14

But he can’t. Kirk would get angry.

      • 19 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister March 7, 2014 at 21:39

Kirk Smirk…time to rise up Punchies! :) I have no idea what I’m endorsing here…I feel rather nervous for them.

      • 20 Professor VJ Duke March 8, 2014 at 20:38

 You know, DS always does the same sort of thing.

      • 21 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister March 8, 2014 at 21:17

He does…well that makes me feel a bit bits and bits better, Duketh.

      • 22 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 21:49

         Exceptional use, Audith!

Really cool! Give me that phone…

        I’ll take them all. :D

        They should burn a bit.

        Ouch!

      • 37 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 21:53

You sat on a tac, I suppose.

      • 38 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister March 13, 2014 at 02:48

No…you poked me in the eye again. Stop doing that, Duke. I’ll be blind and you’ll have to lead me around so I can find my chair.

      • 39 Professor VJ Duke March 13, 2014 at 13:16

 It would be a good excuse for a patch, and then I’d be the captain. :D

        I’m sorry! :)

      • 48 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister March 16, 2014 at 05:18

        Cucumber. ..Duketh.

      • 49 Professor VJ Duke March 16, 2014 at 19:17

Are you calling me a cucumber?

  5. 50 Susan P March 6, 2014 at 19:18

Please, please tell me the dead fish was not Dean.

    • 51 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:32

Haha, it was not–I hope. But can we be sure?

      • 52 Susan P March 7, 2014 at 17:01

If I don’t hear from him soon I’m sending DS out to find him.

      • 53 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 21:14

        I’ll send Mic.

      • 54 Susan P March 7, 2014 at 22:35

I think you both should go.

      • 55 Professor VJ Duke March 8, 2014 at 20:52

Mic is cranky about being compared to me. (No, really, he and I have good laughs over it.)

      • 56 Susan P March 8, 2014 at 21:06

My mind is boggling at the thought of the two of you laughing together.

      • 57 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 21:44

        I wonder why.

      • 58 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 00:51

Well, some of us do laugh with ourselves, but we don’t talk about it.

      • 59 Professor VJ Duke March 10, 2014 at 17:08

        Do I talk about it?

      • 60 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 22:41

That’s a question you should ask yourself, methinks.

      • 61 Professor VJ Duke March 11, 2014 at 01:04

Mic and I are quite different! The whole MicP Studios team is real! (Maybe they have pseudonyms, but they’re real!)

      • 62 Susan P March 11, 2014 at 23:36

Real crazy? I know they are real people. But some of the other characters in the PL, well….

      • 63 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 14:19

        Well? Tell me! :)

      • 64 Susan P March 12, 2014 at 16:01

Well, Brother Bek makes me feel nervous.

      • 65 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 17:59

Me too. In truth, I don’t like him!

      • 66 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 18:05

Somebody needs to smack him up side the head.

      • 67 Professor VJ Duke March 13, 2014 at 21:59

        Yes. MM should.

      • 68 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 22:10

        And then what?

      • 69 Professor VJ Duke March 13, 2014 at 22:17

        Well, leave him then.

      • 70 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 22:34

        There will be repercussions.

      • 71 Professor VJ Duke March 14, 2014 at 17:49

        I hate repercussions.

      • 72 Susan P March 15, 2014 at 01:26

        It depends on the repercussions.

      • 73 Professor VJ Duke March 15, 2014 at 17:09

        Aren’t all repercussions bad?

      • 74 Susan P March 16, 2014 at 20:37

As in “There will be repercussions?”

      • 75 Professor VJ Duke March 17, 2014 at 14:40

        Yes, they’re the bad kinds.

      • 76 Susan P March 17, 2014 at 20:28

Stay away from them. for your own good

      • 77 Professor VJ Duke March 17, 2014 at 22:42

        I”ll try!

      • 78 Susan P March 19, 2014 at 17:01

        :)

  6. 79 Simply skeptical March 6, 2014 at 17:28

Well it is certainly obvious where all the confusion comes from now. The center of the PL is the Punchies…. of course. Is this a dead fish upon which to feast or a fish for entertainment? Shall we hear music commence as in “Dean”?

    • 80 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 19:11

That’s it exactly! Well, I think it was meant to be supper, but…do you think Kirk accepted it? I don’t think so.

      • 81 Simply skeptical March 6, 2014 at 23:25

Naw… he definitely didn’t sound enthused. It is deceased right? This is downright alarming dadblameit!

      • 82 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:56

Maybe its gills are still flapping! You better go check.

  7. 83 FictionFan March 6, 2014 at 15:17

The really worrying thing about this story is that a) Kirk sounds as if he’s finally lost all touch with sanity and b) Kirk sounds soooo like the Professor! I do hope the fish didn’t come from Ruber’s cafe – the Punchies are a weird bunch, but I wouldn’t like to see them all horrendously poisoned…

    • 84 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 19:05

 Like the professor? How so?

Not even Kirk? I’m sure you’d like to poison Mic…

      • 85 FictionFan March 6, 2014 at 23:25

‘having speaks with’ ‘broughteth thou’ – all very Professorial. So in line with your new policy, answer a straight question…is the Professor copying Kirk or is Kirk copying the Professor?

If Kirk is coying the Prof, I say poison him! But I’d never want to poison Mic – he’s so c&a and fluffy. Just like the Professor!

      • 86 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:56

Well, I’ve picked up a lot of things from the PL. Look how clear that was! :D I deserve a muffin, I think.

How can he be just like the professor?

      • 87 FictionFan March 7, 2014 at 18:20

That almost was a straight answer! Almost! So you almost deserve a muffin. Sadly I ate it.

It’s very strange, isn’t it? Perhaps you’re identical twins in a parallel universe…

      • 88 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 21:18

What a lead up for that. That was cruel. That was rotten. That was…depressing, too.

        :P :P

      • 89 FictionFan March 9, 2014 at 18:22

        But it was also tasty…

        See? Identical!

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 21:53

        I hope it wasn’t cherry.

        Maybe fraternal?

      • 91 FictionFan March 10, 2014 at 19:47

        Chocolate, of course.

        Maybe.

      • 92 Professor VJ Duke March 11, 2014 at 00:53

        Yucketh! Chocolate… Fooey!

        And maybe not.

  8. 93 PorterGirl March 6, 2014 at 15:12

A Punchy exam! That is one exam I wouldn’t mind studying for :)

    • 94 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 19:04

      I’d still get the shivers.

  9. 95 walt walker March 6, 2014 at 14:40

I get the impression the fish was laid upon the table scales, fins and all. Or was it prepared in some way? Perhaps a better question is, was the fish itself prepared to go out like this?

    • 96 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 19:00

 Walt, you always make me laugh! And, yes, it was laid on the table scales, fins, and all.

Now about going out…I’m not sure. Actually, probably not. Is there a fish who’d like to go to a desert cave?

      • 97 walt walker March 7, 2014 at 00:26

It would have to be a very adventurous fish. And probably not a wise one.
On the other hand, we sent a man to the moon, so the fish ought to be allowed to send one of their own to the desert, don’t you think?

      • 98 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 14:02

Excellent point, Walt. But we sent him with oxygen, they didn’t send the fish with water. What do you make of that?

      • 99 walt walker March 8, 2014 at 16:53

        That’s bad planning.

      • 100 Professor VJ Duke March 8, 2014 at 20:53

        Yes, I bet you’re right.

  10. 101 Julie Harris March 6, 2014 at 14:30

Is there something fishy about fish for dinner? A twilight moon sounds lovely :)

    • 102 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 19:00

Yes, that’s it! :D I don’t think Kirk was pleased, do you? Maybe steak would have been better.

It does! Is Twilight at night?

  11. 103 Jackie March 6, 2014 at 14:26

    ick! Eating animals is gross.

    • 104 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 18:59

      Even fishy ones?

      • 105 Jackie March 6, 2014 at 19:12

Not even the fishy ones. Swedish Fish is the only fish I eat. :-D

      • 106 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 19:13

Oh, they’re so good! Aren’t they?

      • 107 Jackie March 6, 2014 at 19:23

        Oh yeah! I love them!

      • 108 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:33

The professor love them too much.

  12. 109 Bethy March 6, 2014 at 14:14

Wowawee! What’s so bad about a fish dinner? It’s one of my favorites! Unless of course it was Deanthefish.

And what about this exam? Exams make me nervous.

    • 110 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 18:59

Yes, yes, that would be horrid! Kirk doesn’t seem to like fish. A fish fry is good, I think.

      How about Punchyish ones?

      • 111 Bethy March 9, 2014 at 21:04

I don’t know anything about Punchyish ones!

      • 112 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 22:01

Me neither, but I’m sure they’re rather fun!

      • 113 Bethy March 10, 2014 at 13:29

really? A fun exam? I have got to see that one!

      • 114 Professor VJ Duke March 10, 2014 at 17:16

Yes, I admit it’s never been done before. I hate exams worse than…than…bees!

      • 115 Bethy March 11, 2014 at 17:39

Well I would like to see if I could pass a punchy exam. I don’t like bees either. I always get stuck on the stinging part.

      • 116 Professor VJ Duke March 11, 2014 at 19:14

Me too. Though the professor’s never been stung.

      • 117 Bethy March 12, 2014 at 13:45

I was once when I was small on the foot (hated wearing shoes so that’s what I got) and my foot blew up so big I could barely walk on it!

      • 118 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 14:40

Oh my! That’s horrid. What sort of stinger-creepy was it?

      • 119 Bethy March 14, 2014 at 14:37

Erm. Don’t know if I remember correctly, but some sort of bumble bee. It was on a lawn in PA, so whatever is common around there. I don’t think it was a yellow jacket.

      • 120 Professor VJ Duke March 14, 2014 at 18:05

Yellow jackets and Bumbles have an equally bad sting on the pain scale. Hornets are way worse, actually. And a honey bee would leave the stinger in.

      • 121 Bethy March 17, 2014 at 14:45

I can’t remember if we had to remove the stinger or not. I think it was ages and ages ago. I bet my Mommy would remember.

      • 122 Professor VJ Duke March 17, 2014 at 14:55

I’m just very curious about strange things. :D

      • 123 Bethy March 17, 2014 at 15:44

I understand. I am curious about a good deal of things myself. And I remember odd bits and other bits too. :D

      • 124 Professor VJ Duke March 17, 2014 at 22:24

        That’s awesome, then!

      • 125 Bethy March 18, 2014 at 12:46

        :D

      • 126 Bethy March 17, 2014 at 21:27

My mom just told me that I was stung several times by yellow jackets. I knew she would remember. :)

      • 127 Professor VJ Duke March 17, 2014 at 22:50

Ah, those buggers! You know, I declared war on them ever since their invasion of my property.

      • 128 Bethy March 17, 2014 at 23:54

        Death to yellow jackets! :)

      • 129 Professor VJ Duke March 18, 2014 at 12:38

All of them, yes! The snake-eaters.

    • 130 Susan P March 6, 2014 at 19:20

But what if it was DeantheFish?

      • 131 Bethy March 9, 2014 at 21:05

that is a big what if.

      • 132 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 00:38

        More likely a big fish.

  13. 133 L. Marie March 6, 2014 at 14:12

Methinks Kirk is up to something about that fish. . . .
    Is it deanthefish?

    • 134 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 18:58

 Goodness! I hope not. I don’t think Kirk was too pleased to see a fish, do you?

  14. 135 InfiniteZip March 6, 2014 at 14:06

    Mmmmmm what kind of fish?

    • 136 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 18:54

      Umm…well…a tuna?

  15. 137 ladycheetah7 March 6, 2014 at 14:01

Rats and a Heifer! You left us hanging once again PVJ. All talk about this supposed exam and nothing about the fish. Hmmm….

So does this mean that Kirk is confessing that he and Punchy are one and the same?

    • 138 Professor VJ Duke March 6, 2014 at 18:53

 You mean you have a question? If so, just ask. I’ll answer it in the clearest way possible. It’s a new thing I’m starting.

No, he wouldn’t do that. I bet he thinks it was a vision of sorts.

      • 139 ladycheetah7 March 6, 2014 at 19:34

More of a statement and was hoping to glean from your response.
        A vision, huh? O.K.

      • 140 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:35

Well, the exam was sort of just introduced. I’d say it was quite shocking to the other P’s. Now, the fish…pure, unexpected dadblamery.

Yes, Kirk would never say PM isn’t real, you know.

    • 141 Susan P March 6, 2014 at 19:20

      I’m worried that it’s DeantheFish.

      • 142 ladycheetah7 March 6, 2014 at 19:34

        Ahhhhh.
Wouldn’t that be like Punchy cannibalism.?

      • 143 Susan P March 6, 2014 at 19:36

You don’t imagine that they would stop at cannibalism, do you?

      • 144 ladycheetah7 March 6, 2014 at 21:20

Ha! By the way they think absolutely not. Total dysfunction on the PL

      • 145 Susan P March 6, 2014 at 21:37

Do you think the Professor eggs them on?

      • 146 ladycheetah7 March 6, 2014 at 22:05

I think PVJ has his limits. That would seem a beyond his expectation. Now what the characters will do is the question at hand. Perhaps Mr. R would find it “rude and crude” and I think even DS might consider that gross. He is “out there” but I think even he has boundaries he wouldn’t surpass.

      • 147 Susan P March 6, 2014 at 22:49

Oh, absolutely. He would not go beyond the boundary of tasteless. He just likes to stir the pot.

      • 148 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:54

So, you both think the professor is an upstanding sort of lad?

      • 149 Susan P March 7, 2014 at 16:42

Wait…were you eavesdropping on our conversation?

      • 150 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 21:00

        Well..maybe.

      • 151 Susan P March 7, 2014 at 21:53

For shame, Professor. You know better than to eavesdrop! :D

      • 152 Professor VJ Duke March 8, 2014 at 20:39

I do not, you must know!

      • 153 Susan P March 8, 2014 at 21:11

The way to not eavesdrop in public is to use a Chinese wall.

      • 154 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 21:45

        The great wall?

      • 155 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 01:04

No, a Chinese wall. Not the Wall of China.

      • 156 Professor VJ Duke March 10, 2014 at 17:11

What is a Chinese wall? I’m just testing to see if you know.

      • 157 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 23:23

        Right then:

A Chinese wall is a protocol that prevents the exchange of information between two parts of a business or in the case of the CIA between two separate parts of an operation for purposes of security and to control the information flow.

        Did I pass?

      • 158 Professor VJ Duke March 11, 2014 at 01:05

Yes, yes! That was very good. And wowawee!

      • 159 Susan P March 11, 2014 at 23:37

Thank you, sir. I have watched Covert Affairs, and that was my first exposure to the term.

      • 160 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 14:21

        It’s rather neat.

      • 161 Susan P March 12, 2014 at 16:03

        It’s a neat concept, I agree.

      • 162 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 18:02

        Definitely.

      • 163 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 18:09

        :)

      • 164 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 13:32

        But why?

      • 165 Susan P March 7, 2014 at 17:01

Why do you want to know?

      • 166 Professor VJ Duke March 7, 2014 at 21:14

        Curious, you know.

      • 167 Susan P March 7, 2014 at 22:34

Well, I’ve heard that eavesdroppers never hear anything good about themselves. :D

      • 168 Professor VJ Duke March 8, 2014 at 20:51

        Ooo…that’s very true. Rats.

      • 169 Susan P March 8, 2014 at 21:05

        No heifer? I feel cheated…

      • 170 Professor VJ Duke March 9, 2014 at 21:43

        He died.

      • 171 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 00:50

I think we need to send the Professor to take an animal husbandry class to learn that a heifer is never a “he.”

      • 172 Professor VJ Duke March 10, 2014 at 17:08

 Woops…You know I have good intentions! I really did know that, I promise…

      • 173 Susan P March 10, 2014 at 22:41

I dunno – maybe things are different in the PL?

      • 174 Professor VJ Duke March 11, 2014 at 01:03

        Not that different!

      • 175 Susan P March 11, 2014 at 23:35

Depends on what DS is working on in his workshop at any one given time. :D

      • 176 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 14:18

Maybe he just fixes trees, like the Grinch.

      • 177 Susan P March 12, 2014 at 16:00

        He’s smiling….that seems a bit Ominous.

      • 178 Professor VJ Duke March 12, 2014 at 17:59

        Extremely so!

      • 179 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 18:04

Do you think he will meddle with the trip? He’s not on the manifest.

      • 180 Professor VJ Duke March 13, 2014 at 21:59

        I know he’s not…but…Ruber is going, so…

      • 181 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 22:10

I heard DS saying he suffers from motion sickness and he wouldn’t set foot in that plane.

      • 182 Professor VJ Duke March 13, 2014 at 22:16

Yep. I believe that. But do you suppose he’ll be watching for Ruber?

      • 183 Susan P March 13, 2014 at 22:34

He’s ALWAYS watching for Ruber. You know that Ruber gave all of the money he took to Bro. Beck, right?

      • 184 Professor VJ Duke March 14, 2014 at 17:49

Is that what he did with it? He’s going to be in big trouble. That’s right. Bro. Beck was financing the thing, I believe.

      • 185 Susan P March 15, 2014 at 01:25

There’s going to be heck to play when DS gets Ruber home.

      • 186 Professor VJ Duke March 15, 2014 at 17:09

Maybe Ruby will stick up for himself?

      • 187 Susan P March 16, 2014 at 20:36

Well, either way it won’t be pretty.

      • 188 Professor VJ Duke March 17, 2014 at 14:40

        Very true.

      • 189 Susan P March 17, 2014 at 20:27

        :D
