Selfishness vs Selflessness

So this wicked professor–who is also heartless from a battle injury–forgot to write a post for today. Or maybe I ran out of time.

Anyway, I’ve been deep in thought thinking about something, and it’s this:

“The difference between Selfishness and Selflessness is what side of the conflict you’re on.”

And it was written by V. Shnodgrate.

Punchy Family, do you suppose that statement is true or not? Let’s have a grand debate!

Also, here’s a picture:

Although there are exceptions, I don’t think that people typically view their selfish actions as selfless. We often defend our selfishness with claims of survival of the fittest or deserving; but selflessness is setting aside our own desire for the sake of others. People frequently think it good to pursue their goals despite others’ protest; but all but the truly mad recognize these actions are mainly for themselves.

Ah, very good point. It’s a bit confusing sometimes, isn’t it? So, do you suppose the proverb is semi-rigth?

      • 3 Micah Kipfer July 16, 2014 at 01:43

Oh, well over half-right, to be sure.

      • 4 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 12:56

Which is a pretty good margin, I’d say. Though I’m not sure. I suppose you could say that even a tiny bit of wrong ruins the whole operation, huh?

      • 5 Micah Kipfer July 16, 2014 at 18:56

For many things; but the implications of the proverb remain that we ought to rethink how good the things we do are, which is exactly the same application as my critique of it, so it’s still pretty fancy.

      • 6 Professor VJ Duke July 17, 2014 at 00:19

Well, that’s super then. It confused this professor horribly, you know.

  2. 7 MissTiffany July 12, 2014 at 14:22

Every villain is a hero in his own mind. And if you tell yourself a lie long enough, eventually you’ll start believing it (like if I keep telling myself how wonderful Mark Twain is…). So I think a selfish person could be led to believe he is being selfless…but in reality he is still being selfish.

I am a terrible selfish person at times. I don’t like it, but I must admit it to be true. But since we’re not debating the right or wrongness of being selfish vs. selfless, I won’t feel bad about it. :p

I am still waiting for my copy of Innocents Abroad to come in at the library. They are taking a delightfully long time about it. :p

    • 8 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 12:41

Hmm! Look how you ripio poor Twain! You should convince yourself that he’s amazing! Well, the professor is a villain, in truth. So, that means I’m selfish, but I think it’s selfless. I can’t even spell these two, you know.

      *laughs* Well…you’re are a villain…

It’s a long book! Complain and burn the library down!

      • 9 MissTiffany July 14, 2014 at 23:29

Hehehe…I had to work it in there, you know. I can’t let Twain get away with his lies. I think it’s alright to be a villain, as you well know Professor (seeing as my alter ego heads an intergalatic evil organization). Bah, spelling is over rated.

Oh no! No matter how villainous I become, I could never burn down a library. Such an act would be the purest of evil, surely!

      • 10 Professor VJ Duke July 15, 2014 at 12:46

But he doesn’t lie! He tells the dadblame truth! Especially where Austen is concerned!

Oh dear. But Chaos might make you one day, you know!

  3. 11 Susan P July 11, 2014 at 18:39

I thinks they is mostly the opposites of one another.

    • 12 Professor VJ Duke July 12, 2014 at 01:45

      You sound MM-ish! But…really?

      • 13 Susan P July 12, 2014 at 15:04

Oh, busted. I have been hanging around with him quite a bit.

        Really really.

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 12:47

Is he messing around? He always is.

        Hmm!

      • 15 Susan P July 14, 2014 at 14:40

Of course he is. You really should keep an eye on him.

      • 16 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 19:44

        But I”m not his keeper!

      • 17 Susan P July 14, 2014 at 20:04

        It’s your responsibility

      • 18 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 20:06

Rats and a Heifer! Is not!

      • 19 Susan P July 15, 2014 at 02:27

Well, you might still want to watch him. You should hear what he tells me.

      • 20 Professor VJ Duke July 15, 2014 at 12:49

What does he tell you? Now I’m worried.

      • 21 Susan P July 15, 2014 at 21:22

I can’t tell you what he told me.

      • 22 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 00:48

        Why?

      • 23 Susan P July 16, 2014 at 12:25

People who start telling everyone other people’s business soon have no friends. ;)

      • 24 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 13:14

But you don’t want him anyway!

      • 25 Susan P July 16, 2014 at 14:16

        He has his useful moments.

      • 26 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 17:32

        Like the professor?

      • 27 Susan P July 16, 2014 at 18:37

I think he may be very much like the Professor on some days.

      • 28 Professor VJ Duke July 17, 2014 at 00:18

        Oh not, MM.

      • 29 Susan P July 17, 2014 at 18:38

What? I was talking about Mark M.

      • 30 Professor VJ Duke July 17, 2014 at 22:42

        Oh…really? How?

      • 31 Susan P July 18, 2014 at 16:06

        With my words.

      • 32 Professor VJ Duke July 18, 2014 at 16:48

No, how’s he like the professor?

      • 33 Susan P July 18, 2014 at 17:53

        Is he like the professor?

      • 34 Professor VJ Duke July 19, 2014 at 01:03

        I’d say no….wouldn’t you?

      • 35 Susan P July 19, 2014 at 18:26

        On most days I would.

      • 36 Professor VJ Duke July 20, 2014 at 15:50

        There you are, then.

      • 37 Susan P July 20, 2014 at 21:12

Where am I? I want to know.

      • 38 Professor VJ Duke July 21, 2014 at 13:10

        In the PL?

      • 39 Susan P July 21, 2014 at 13:43

Oh. Hmmmm…I thought I was in a rain forest.

      • 40 Professor VJ Duke July 21, 2014 at 17:04

        Watch out for bandits!

      • 41 Susan P July 21, 2014 at 18:43

The bandits are at the beach.

      • 42 Professor VJ Duke July 22, 2014 at 13:27

        In swimming trunks?

      • 43 Susan P July 22, 2014 at 13:39

Some do, some don’t. At least the ones in Europe don’t wear them.

      • 44 Professor VJ Duke July 22, 2014 at 13:46

Naked bandits would be easy to deal with!

      • 45 Susan P July 23, 2014 at 01:36

        hahaha! you said naked.

      • 46 Professor VJ Duke July 23, 2014 at 13:27

        Well…isn’t that what you meant?

      • 47 Susan P July 23, 2014 at 17:23

There you go twisting my reply. *huge sigh*

      • 48 Professor VJ Duke July 23, 2014 at 19:47

        No fair!

      • 49 Susan P July 23, 2014 at 23:31

Wait! I’m the injured party here.

      • 50 Professor VJ Duke July 24, 2014 at 13:42

Hey, now don’t get to manipulating for me!

      • 51 Susan P July 24, 2014 at 14:35

        It’s not manipulation. It’s advice.

      • 52 Professor VJ Duke July 24, 2014 at 18:01

Do you suppose the professor manipulates?

      • 53 Susan P July 24, 2014 at 21:23

Put it to you this way: he tries hard.

      • 54 Professor VJ Duke July 25, 2014 at 13:31

*laughs* That statement makes me look wicked, and, at the same time, bad at my craft! Dadblameit.

      • 55 Susan P July 26, 2014 at 17:29

No, it just means that DS is better at it.

      • 56 Professor VJ Duke July 27, 2014 at 15:42

        He’s always getting the credit.

      • 57 Susan P July 30, 2014 at 00:27

He’s a slick one, he is. I hope you have someone watching your back!

      • 58 Professor VJ Duke July 30, 2014 at 16:39

        I should hire a bodyguard, you’re right.

      • 59 Susan P July 30, 2014 at 17:32

        Got anyone in mind?

      • 60 Professor VJ Duke July 31, 2014 at 12:59

        My butler?

      • 61 Susan P July 31, 2014 at 15:54

Is he the one who is cousin to Bro. Bek?

      • 62 Professor VJ Duke July 31, 2014 at 23:27

I hope not! His name is Mr. Pierpod.

      • 63 Susan P August 1, 2014 at 19:25

        You never can tell.

      • 64 Professor VJ Duke August 1, 2014 at 22:14

        I suppose not.

  4. 65 The Dancing Rider July 8, 2014 at 20:29

If you are speaking on in terms of “conflict”, as in the proverb, I think it makes no sense. It may be that taking sides in a conflict is ultimtaely selfish, but with an outward veneer of “selflessness” in terms of personal sacrifice or believing one is doing the “right thing”. Bottom line is I find this proverb dadblamery and vexing! ;-)

    • 66 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:23

Hahaha! DR! I did at first, too. Then I keep going back and forth on it. It’s one of those things you read that you want to understand, but can’t. Do you suppose we should throw it in the fire?

      • 67 The Dancing Rider July 9, 2014 at 18:19

Oh yes, into the fire — definitely! Was it Emmanuel Kant who pointed out that the bottom line of doing most things is to benefit ourselves in some way?! (That’s a brain strain for me to try to remember….) In any case – this blasted proverb is just SO very vexing! ;-)

      • 68 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 23:04

Oh, I wouldn’t know! (Symph might.) *laughs* Well…into the fire then! Because it was vexing. Oh dear. Aren’t I vexing? See where this could lead?

      • 69 The Dancing Rider July 10, 2014 at 20:26

        Ha, ha. Aren’t we all vexing…. ;-)

      • 70 Professor VJ Duke July 11, 2014 at 12:35

        Except the professor!

      • 71 The Dancing Rider July 9, 2014 at 18:23

Or, perhaps throw it into the volcano. That would do. ;-)

      • 72 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 23:05

        Like the ring?

  5. 73 John W. Howell July 8, 2014 at 17:44

Selfless and selfish co-exist with each act. When one is selfless the recipient of the selflessness is by a defacto condition, selfish. What would be cool is to see two fight it out to determine who is selfless and who is selfish. Imagine deciding who should strike the first blow. (My head hurts with these thoughts)

    • 74 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:22

*laughing* But you have a great point, John. Do you suppose we could get two competitors to fight it out? It would be neatio to see it go back and forth.

      • 75 John W. Howell July 9, 2014 at 16:21

To spice it up we give a trophy to the most selfless. May take forever for the first blow.

      • 76 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:57

Yes, I fear we’d be there for years, John.

  6. 77 erinkenobi2893 July 8, 2014 at 15:55

Personally, I think it’s not quite true. You can be selfish in a good cause, or selfless in a bad one. Variety of variation, you know?

    • 78 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:29

Yes, I see what you’re saying. But if you do something selflessly–that’s good for you–does that make is selfish? What a gardoobling matter.

      • 79 erinkenobi2893 July 9, 2014 at 15:54

I don’t think so. You just don’t think of yourself first, is all selflessness means.

      • 80 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:56

Oh. That’s true. Too much for my Sith mind. Dooku wouldn’t like this.

      • 81 erinkenobi2893 July 10, 2014 at 14:30

Ehhh, Dooku can be altruistic at times. When it suits him.

      • 82 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 17:57

He was a good chap. Sad Anakin killed him.

      • 83 erinkenobi2893 July 11, 2014 at 19:16

I know, right?! He was an awesome villain, and should have lasted at least ten years or so longer. :’-(

      • 84 Professor VJ Duke July 12, 2014 at 01:48

        At least, yes!

      • 85 erinkenobi2893 July 12, 2014 at 17:29

It’s so annoying they killed him off! Already!!! :-(

      • 86 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 12:50

        We should revolt.

      • 87 erinkenobi2893 July 14, 2014 at 16:34

Well, I’m about to revolt if Disney messes up the next trilogy.

      • 88 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 19:52

Yes, with plenty of pies at our disposal. (I’ll join the revolt, of course.)

      • 89 erinkenobi2893 July 15, 2014 at 14:57

Yay! :-) Thanks for joining, Professor!

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke July 15, 2014 at 15:50

        My pleasure!

      • 91 erinkenobi2893 July 15, 2014 at 19:45

        :-D

  7. 92 Louise B. Leger July 8, 2014 at 15:38

I’m not sure selflessness truly exists. I mean you can commit seemingly selfless acts but don’t we all do selfless things for a clear conscience? Does that not make it no longer selfless? I don’t think it is quite the same as selfish. To me selfish is doing something with no others in mind. But to do a good thing for another person is beneficial to both you and the recipient. But that also doesn’t mean you shouldn’t help people. Just do the right thing and don’t worry about if it is truly selfless or not. Because not worrying about your own selflessness is probably the closest to selfless you can get.

    • 93 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:29

What a grand point, Louise! So…selflessness doesn’t exist, because, in the end, it can be seen as selfish? So, does that make Shnod right, do you think?

      • 94 Louise B. Leger July 9, 2014 at 03:39

I think so. In a sense that selfishness is only a matter of perspective

      • 95 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:33

        Perspective…it’s such a tricky thing, isn’t it?

      • 96 Louise B. Leger July 9, 2014 at 15:22

        it is

      • 97 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:47

        Rats and a Heifer!

  8. 98 technophile9 July 8, 2014 at 15:01

As for the debate, I am quite uncertain. Personally, I lean towards saying yes all the time so I don’t annoy anyone. XD I need to learn to say no.

And it certainly is far too hot! :”/ *sweating face*

    • 99 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:22

Yes, Joe, saying no is hard. I must work at this too. Why do you suppose it’s so dadblame hard?

How hot is it over there?

  9. 100 Hazy July 8, 2014 at 14:29

Heartless, as in no organ that pumps blood or figuratively feels emotions? What is this battle injury you speak of? I hope the professor is all right (and I think he is not heartless at all).

Hmm… *puts on nerdy serious glasses* I suddenly thought of a song where a line says “And all I was trying to do was save my own skin, and so are you.” I think, in a way, that’s selfishness. I think it gets a terribly bad reputation, but it’s a way of protecting oneself, kind of a defense mechanism or reflex of sorts, I suppose. Selflessness is a remarkably incredible act that is for the good of others without thinking of “saving your own skin.” It’s not for the faint of heart. I think everyone is capable of both, but most of the time selfishness tends to overcome selflessness.

    • 101 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:21

Oh yes, I’m just fine! Well, I like to say I’m heartless. (No real battle injury. But I’ve fought many wars–sorta like Weatherly.) See, if I’m heartless I can be wicked. Do I have something dreadfully wrong? I could, you know.

Haha! Love the glasses… Yes! That sounds about right. And I agree. So, do you suppose Shnod right, then?

      • 102 Hazy July 9, 2014 at 12:29

Haha, say what you want professor. I probably would never believe thou art heartless. Wicked, sometimes, perhaps, but not heartless.

Thank you! *curtsys* The glasses make me look a bit more serious. Yeah, I think Shnod makes a pretty good point!

      • 103 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:40

Oh rats! I guess convincing the PF that I’m heatless will be hard. I mean, it’s not really possible–physically.

*bows* They do! I think he does, too, every so often! *laughs*

      • 104 Hazy July 11, 2014 at 12:46

Maybe you can ask Weatherly to teach you some tricks to be perceived as heartless. He’s small, but everyone kind of fears him.

Haha, yes he does! He has his moments, it seems.

      • 105 Professor VJ Duke July 11, 2014 at 13:10

Yes, I don’t think height has anything to do with it. Weatherly will have to teach me.

        Moments…like the professor!

  10. 106 AmyRose July 8, 2014 at 14:13

I must say, Professor, there is no such word as selfessness. Did you mean selfLESSness? Or did you, in all your worldy wisdom, make up a word to now put into the standard dictionary? I do not understand the meaning of selfessness, so how can I debate if I do not understand? Respectfurlly, LadyP

    • 107 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:19

Now, LadyP, you are in error about a few things, love.

First, everyone knows the professor isn’t wise in the least! You have way more worldly wisdom than I’ll ever get–unless you teach me. Will you?

And I believe I didn’t miss an “l”. Tricky to spell, I agree.

      • 108 AmyRose July 8, 2014 at 16:47

Come now, Professor VJ. You are wiser then you lead us to believe! Every Professor is wise, so you are no exception in my eyes. My goodness, you silly goose. Wisdom cannot be taught. It must be experienced. And with the missing “L”. Does this mean as you say, the word is selfLESSness? I do declare, you are a slippery one today! With all due respect, LadyP

      • 109 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:18

The professor is slippery like an eel, wouldn’t you say? Well, LadyP, this professor isn’t a normal professor, so doesn’t that make me dull?

      • 110 AmyRose July 9, 2014 at 14:35

No more dull then I, Professor. How dull is dull? Or is it mull? Null? I am that, I am not. Oh my, I fear you now have me fuddled, just as you.

      • 111 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:45

        Should we have some tea?

      • 112 AmyRose July 10, 2014 at 01:03

Tea and biscuits? Oh, that would be lovely, Professor, just lovely. Why, thank you. *blushing*

      • 113 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 11:48

        Yes…maybe cherry tea!

      • 114 AmyRose July 10, 2014 at 13:14

But of course, Professor, I expected nothing less. Cherry tea it is.

      • 115 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 17:51

        That’s awesome! Thank you, LadyP.

  11. 116 Julie Harris July 8, 2014 at 14:13

Deep thoughts this morning, Professor!! Here is my heartfelt answer- my desire is to always do what the good Lord desires me to do. Most time that is putting others first, but there are times I must take care of me first! However, any conflict can be resolved with chocolate :)

    • 117 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:16

Julie–your answer totally rocks! I knew you’d make sense of the matter. I get so gardoobled at times. So…do you think Shnod is right overall?

      Cherry chocolate?

      • 118 Julie Harris July 8, 2014 at 18:31

        Yes….and cherry chocolate is awesome

      • 119 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:22

It is! I kinda like it lots.

  12. 120 Bethy July 8, 2014 at 14:00

I’ve been dealing with mostly melted chocolate…one of the Princess’ favorite snacks is chocolate chips. And since chocolate chips help the whole get-in-the-car-to-go-to-swim-lessons thing, we’ve been giving her a few. However, she likes to save some for after swim and of course they are all melted, but still able to be eaten and spread all over the carseat, the towel, and the swimming suit. Oi!

    • 121 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:10

*laughing* No! What a mess. But I see where the chips could help the matter. Doesn’t the Princess like swimming much? Maybe you should just add wax or something. Wondering if that’s even edible now…

      • 122 Bethy July 9, 2014 at 15:46

I’m not sure if the Princess likes swimming or not. It hasn’t ever been her favorite thing at the end of the day (yet!) She doesn’t like water in her face or jumping in much, but I think we’re FINALLY getting past that! You know when you are in the third week of doing stuff even if you don’t like it much it turns into a routine.
I turned into a mean mommy and said no chocolate chips in the car!!! She can have them before or after, but not during!

      • 123 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:54

She sounds like I was when young. I hated getting water in my eyes. And up my nose! Yucketh!

        Mommy’s are so mean! *laughs*

  13. 124 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 8, 2014 at 13:55

Both are of use, Duke. Selfishness keeps use safe and protected, yet never harm someone by doing it. However, self deprivation comes into play and that’s when maybe you need to. Selflessness is the ultimate sacrifice and usually done out of love. It is a beautiful thing to be the recipient of and even better to give of yourself, if that makes sense. Seems early to sort completely, as I was up late last night. A nice way to start the day…

Chocolate melts and you just lick it, savor and swollow to enjoy vs bitingg, chewing and then swollowing. Pay no mind to the sun. *smiles*

    • 125 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:07

Audith, that makes a lot of sense for sure. So…do you suppose, then, that Shnod’s right overall. That they’re basically the same thing? Depends on how you look at it? A confusing day to start the way, you mean. Strike that previous sentence and reverse it, please.

The sun tries to steal it, though!

      • 126 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 8, 2014 at 22:59

I do think Shnod’s right, Duke. Depending on how you look at it. What’s your opinion? Why would I strike that perfect sentence?

The sun does not want the chocolate, Duke. Maybe you’re paranoid. ..

      • 127 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:24

I think he is right too. But I’m getting confused. It’s such a fine issue overall. It’s just one of those dadblame things. Well, the sentence was a bit jumbled, wouldn’t you say?

        Are you sure?

      • 128 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 9, 2014 at 15:25

Rough to sort, I agree. The sentence made me laugh. I liked it.

Now you have me wondering. Yes…

      • 129 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:48

My mind think’s in circles and squares and semi-triangles

        There’s martians on the sun.

      • 130 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 10, 2014 at 00:19

Mine in balls, spheres and globes and occasional hexagon.

        Not my sun…

      • 131 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 11:48

        Hexagon…I bet that’s quite interesting?

        Why not?

      • 132 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 10, 2014 at 16:47

It’s a good way to describe my brain and thought processes. *laughing a lotta* Loads of goes and stops and turns…

I have visions of that little green dude…what’s his name?

      • 133 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 18:07

Turns are healthy. At least, I think so.

        Yoda?

      • 134 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 10, 2014 at 21:29

        They are!

        Yes…haha

      • 135 Professor VJ Duke July 11, 2014 at 12:44

Darth Duke…that has a ring to it, doesn’t it?

      • 136 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 11, 2014 at 22:15

        I love the name! Ring…

      • 137 Professor VJ Duke July 12, 2014 at 01:52

*laughs* I have my ring still!

      • 138 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 12, 2014 at 02:56

Can I see it? I miss your ring…

      • 139 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 12:36

        I just wore it yesterday!

      • 140 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 15, 2014 at 05:10

        Nobody likes a bragger…

      • 141 Professor VJ Duke July 15, 2014 at 12:53

        Huff-Hum to you!

      • 142 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 16, 2014 at 05:24

        *cries*

      • 143 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 13:01

        Don’t think I believe it.

      • 144 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 17, 2014 at 01:04

        Pfft! I did…

      • 145 Professor VJ Duke July 17, 2014 at 14:39

        Really? Why?

      • 146 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 18, 2014 at 03:57

        Why not?

      • 147 Professor VJ Duke July 18, 2014 at 12:48

        That’ll be the day.

      • 148 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister July 18, 2014 at 14:28

        *smiles*

  14. 149 PorterGirl July 8, 2014 at 13:36

Partially melted chocolate is just… divine. Even better if there nuts involved as well. Faced with partially melted chocolate and nuts, I may be very selfish indeed. But then if, say, a hungry Professor came my way I would be happy to share – therefore being very selfless. I suppose they are different ends of the same stick.

    • 150 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:05

Yes, I think so, Lucy. And that’s very nice of you. I love nuts in chocolate. Now if it was a cherry chocolate…I might steal it. Which would be mean. But I’d think twice about your baton, you know.

      • 151 PorterGirl July 8, 2014 at 16:20

Maybe your katana would out-class my baton? I could see us now – a hearty fight over cherry chocolate! But surely, we could join forces and find the source of the cherry chocolate, and take it all for ourselves! Do you know, I could lead an army if there was a food war.

      • 152 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:33

*laughing lots and lots* I’d follow you, I think. Yes, find the source and declare war on that! That’s the ticket. (You know–contrary to popular legend–I haven’t really practiced much with the katana…don’t tell anyone!)

      • 153 PorterGirl July 8, 2014 at 17:42

I shall make it my life’s mission to discover the source of cherry chocolate and declare war on it. Do you think MM will help us? Actually – it can’t be my life’s mission, I have the summer series of Old College starting soon – can it be my life’s mission for a fortnight?

(You’re secret is safe, Professor. I will take the secret to the grave)

      • 154 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:21

I think I’ll get him to, yes! Oh that’s just fine. Don’t worry about it too much, just if you run across it. And definitely! Old College is way more important!

        (*bows* I’m relieved!)

      • 155 PorterGirl July 9, 2014 at 15:11

I’m not sure it is more important, but it does put a dampner on my plans for war-mongering and world domination. Give my best to MM and thank him in advance for his assistance!

      • 156 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:47

I like the part–lots actually–about world domination. I wish I could get involved in that…

      • 157 PorterGirl July 10, 2014 at 05:21

Please do join me. Bring a sturdy hat, it could get bumpy!

      • 158 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 12:03

        Okay! And my sword.

      • 159 PorterGirl July 10, 2014 at 12:19

        Oh yes, good idea.

      • 160 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 17:50

        *nods*

  15. 161 Simply Skeptical July 8, 2014 at 13:05

Hmm… Very interesting thought with billions of threads of truth. So true about the sun melting chocolate. Yesterday’s heat almost melted the chocolate bars I purchased. It doesn’t take long my goodness. Of course, chocolate with worms might hold up a tad better. :-)

    • 162 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:03

Haha! Yes, chocolate is so spoilable, sadly. But maybe not.

What do you make of selfishness, though? Is it okay to be selfish at times?

  16. 163 FictionFan July 8, 2014 at 13:04

Nah, the befuddled old fool is so wrong! Selfishness is when you eat the chocolates and selflessness is when you give them to me instead. See? Very straightforward.

I find that if you eat the chocolate quickly enough, the evil sun doesn’t get a chance to melt it…

(PS All great heroes have great hearts, so the Professor’s heart must have re-grown…)

    • 164 Lisa July 8, 2014 at 15:19

      This…. :)

      • 165 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:25

Now…Lisa…you can’t agree with FictionFan. That’s not fair, you know.

      • 166 Lisa July 8, 2014 at 16:50

Why not? It’s what I think. I don’t understand why it’s not fair.

      • 167 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:19

Well…I mean, it probably is fair. But aren’t I being outnumbered on the professorish side?

      • 168 Lisa July 9, 2014 at 14:29

        Possibly. I see your point.

      • 169 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:44

What should I do? I usually complain for no reason, you know.

    • 170 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:01

But…but…dadblameit! From your perspective, though…wouldn’t you be being selfish? Just a bit, mind you. Just a little, big bit.

I can never do the trick.

(I’m a wicked hero. Aren’t the standards a bit different?)

      • 171 FictionFan July 8, 2014 at 16:09

No, no, not at all! Being selfless would bring you so much joy that I’d actually be doing you a favour by eating the chocolates. Which would be very selfless of me, really. See?

If I were there, I’d do it for you – selfless to a fault, that’s me! *brushes chocolate crumbs off moustache*

(The Professor’s standards are always different, that’s true – but I don’t think he could be so c&a&f if he didn’t have a heart…)

      • 172 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:32

I…I…I’m spinning around in circles. It’s not hard to muddle me up, madam! But…you sound right. Are you? Should I just trust you? If I was Symph I could mount some sort of debate. I’m…too professorish.

*laughing lots* What color is your mustache today?

(But you can’t be sure that I am!)

      • 173 FictionFan July 9, 2014 at 00:38

Yes, you should always trust me and assume that I’m right about everything all the time! *nods emphatically* There’s no such thing as too Professorish…

Ginger! And all the boys look at me now when I go walking about, so it must be terribly attractive, wouldn’t you say? But I might dye it tomorrow – what colour do you think I should go for?

(I’m very, very, very, very, very, very, very sure. Indeed!)

      • 174 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:32

Well…of course you’d say that, but, okay, I agree. *a bit scared* That’s a nice thing to say.

Ginger?! *laughs* Well, let’s hope they’re not staring for different reasons. How about blue or yellow?

*laughing* Still, I don’t believe you!

      • 175 FictionFan July 9, 2014 at 17:44

Don’t be scared! I’d never lead you astray! Well, not often, anyway. And true!

I hope you’re not implying that I might look silly? Blue sounds good – I think I might dye my hair to match. And eyebrows…

But I refer you back to paragraph 1…

      • 176 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 23:04

Not often. Well…maybe I should do the leading?

No! Of course not. Yeah! That’d be hip. You’d look great with blue hair. Eyebrows too? I imagine that’d be hard. I wonder if it’s hard to dye one’s hair.

        Trusting is not believing, madam!

      • 177 FictionFan July 10, 2014 at 01:25

Hmm…OK! It’ll be good practice for when you take me dancing…

Hip??? Good noodles!! I’m far too young to be hip! No, dead easy – you should try it. You could dye it orange to match your baseball cap…

        Well…well…it should be!

      • 178 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 12:01

I suddenly forgot about all that. I’m sorry.

*laughs* Nonsense! Anyone can be hip. But the professor isn’t. *laughs* Did I tell you I had an orange baseball cap? I hope so! Dying hair is so girlish!

It would make things easier, I suppose.

      • 179 FictionFan July 10, 2014 at 15:50

        Huh!

I think so! Didn’t you? Please tell me I didn’t imagine it – I’m already deeply concerned about my (in)sanity… Hmm – what about Ronald Reagan?

        Indeed!

      • 180 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 18:06

No, I do have one. So I probably told you about it. Have I caused you to go insane? I do hope BUS doesn’t blame me.

RR…he dyed his hair? What a girl! Kick him in the pants, I say.

      • 181 FictionFan July 10, 2014 at 23:26

Phew! Yes, I think it was mentioned when you were going through your head-tree bashing contest phase. The sad thing is BUS doesn’t seem to have noticed…

*laughing* I thought you’d spring to his defence too!

      • 182 Professor VJ Duke July 11, 2014 at 13:01

It wasn’t a contest! I’ve given that up for the professorish badminton thingy now. That’s better. But it hurts the voice, I fear. Well, maybe you’ve changed for the better? *hopeful*

No, I won’t! Though I probably shouldn’t rip him. I could see myself wanting to disguise myself one day (for a secret oops mission or something) and I might dye my hair. Maybe silver.

      • 183 FictionFan July 11, 2014 at 18:17

I don’t know whether I want you to explain the ‘hurts the voice’ or not. *laughing lots* Ooh, how rude, Pretty-Nose! Wait till BUS finds out about this…

*giggling helplessly* Oh please, please, PLEASE, dearest C-W-W – please let me come on a secret oops mission with you!!! (Even your typos are c&a!) *cries with laughter*

      • 184 Professor VJ Duke July 12, 2014 at 01:43

Well, sometimes I have to cheer the team on. A few per team. BUS likes me, ’cause we like Riddick. “You keep what you kill.”

*taps his toe indignantly* It wasn’t…cute! Warriors aren’t cute. *laughs* This isn’t fair. I’m about to retire now.

      • 185 FictionFan July 12, 2014 at 20:20

What – like “Oh, Chicky-Woot-Woot, yeah, yeah”? But I don’t kill anything except the occasional insect so that’s not much of a reward. How about “You keep whatever chocolate you find”?

Oh yes it was – supercute! Admit it – you just can’t help it! It’s like a curse – the curse of cuteness! But it makes you stand out from the crowd – all the other warriors are just boring in comparison…please don’t retire!

      • 186 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 13:01

I don’t say that! I’ve tried, but Schwarz says it much better. Have you tried? Insects count. That’s a good start. Even buggy chocolate?

*hangs head* I will not admit it! I really can’t believe it. There you were laughing me to scorn, and I was being earnest. It’s enough to make me blush.

      • 187 FictionFan July 14, 2014 at 19:44

I have – and though it doesn’t sound the way it does when Schwarzy says it, it still sounds good… No, buggy chocolate must be an American thing – we usually put in nuts instead…

I’m so sorry! *hangs head too, guiltily* I’m not even going to mention that blushing is c….

      • 188 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 19:59

He says it best, I’ll maybe agree. Just maybe. Chocolate covered ants…yeah, rather sickening.

*laughs* You just said it! It’s okay. I’ll bear it like a beast. Or warrior.

  17. 189 L. Marie July 8, 2014 at 13:03

Ha! I have to agree with InfiniteZip and Anja. Selfishness is all about power–grasping it to the detriment of others. Selflessness is about power too–releasing it for the good of others.

I agree that one can take either approach to an extreme. Sometimes you need to set boundaries, which might appear selfish to some. (For example, if you’re not at the beck and call of relatives all the time.)

    • 190 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:00

This is such an interesting discussion. So…being selfish can be the right thing to do at times? And even good for you?

  18. 191 E. July 8, 2014 at 13:01

I disagree…. Although sometimes it is necessary to be selfish, it will always be selfishness, and cannot be disguised as deed for someone else.

    • 192 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:00

Aha! Interesting. So if I want a carrot (and you don’t like carrots) is that selfish or selflessness? Selfish because I like them, selflessness because I’m eating them for you. Pardon my professorish mind. Just trying to work this out.

      • 193 E. July 8, 2014 at 16:39

Well, it’s selfish because *you* want the carrot, thinly veiled as selfless because you know I *don’t* want the carrot. Sure, both parties win, but at least one side has an ulterior motive. Being purely selfless would be (somehow) ensuring that I don’t have a carrot to begin with, without any thought to how you could gain something (carrots).

      • 194 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:17

E, you’re very wise. I think I see this. It all has to do with the heart, then?

      • 195 E. July 9, 2014 at 13:17

        Yes, precisely! :)

      • 196 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:45

And I’m heartless! *rather happy about it*

      • 197 E. July 9, 2014 at 13:46

Bahaha! Okay, Professor. If you say so.

      • 198 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:50

        It’s warrior like, isn’t it?

      • 199 E. July 9, 2014 at 13:56

No, because warriors have heart — that’s how they can go into battle. A warrior probably has the most heart of all, despite the fact that he may be taking the lives of others. People without hearts I see as cold, calculating, cunning… Like Lord Vetinari in the Discworld universe. Or Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones.

      • 200 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:43

Well, does that mean I have a heart?

      • 201 E. July 10, 2014 at 00:07

Yes. As your official doctor, I’m afraid you’ve been diagnosed with… humanity. I’m sorry.

      • 202 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 11:46

Rats and a Heifer! I was hoping. Now…I’ll…I’m still unromantic, though.

      • 203 E. July 10, 2014 at 12:24

That’s okay. There’s lots of romantics out there already.

      • 204 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 17:51

That’s what we must work on.

  19. 205 InfiniteZip July 8, 2014 at 12:27

Selfishness is about eating the whole cake yourself, selflessness is about putting the fire out on a loved one when the candles start a fire….no chocolate was harmed in the writing of this response….

    • 206 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 12:35

*laughing lots* Rats! I wanted to melt the chocolate. Are you sure it’s all intact? Maybe dripping it is?

So, would it be wrong to eat the whole cake, then?

      • 207 InfiniteZip July 8, 2014 at 13:26

You must save a slice for the hound you know…..chocolate is bad for hounds.

      • 208 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:04

Really? You mean I shouldn’t give my dogs hot chocolate? Oh dear. And Walt Walker told me it was okay, too.

      • 209 InfiniteZip July 8, 2014 at 16:17

No chocolate….carob yes. Cocoa no no…..

      • 210 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 16:32

        But why?

      • 211 InfiniteZip July 8, 2014 at 16:35

Well dagnabbitt , because I told you so…I am the birthday queen. I get the chocolate, all of it or off with their heads…..but first I would need to borrow your sword thingy.

      • 212 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:16

*laughing* Now don’t be wicked! You mean the great katana? But I can’t give it to you…if you’ll cut my head off! Did you have a cherry cake?

      • 213 InfiniteZip July 9, 2014 at 14:30

cherry?, well no, no cake….apple pie if that counts….and I would never ever ever cut off your head, I like you too much to do such a dastardly thing.

      • 214 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 22:45

It sure does! I love pie. Was it tasty?

Aw, how nice! I’d be sweet, you know.

      • 215 InfiniteZip July 10, 2014 at 10:37

very tasty pie. I know you would be sweet because how could you not be? we finish the pie tonight…even three day old pie is good pie:)

      • 216 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 12:04

Oh, for sure! Pie is always good!!

Well, I can be wicked, you know.

      • 217 InfiniteZip July 10, 2014 at 12:18

no, you are fibbing again. you would never be wicked….you are a good professor.

      • 218 Professor VJ Duke July 10, 2014 at 17:49

        But are you sure?

      • 219 InfiniteZip July 11, 2014 at 12:23

of course, why would you think differently?

      • 220 Professor VJ Duke July 11, 2014 at 13:08

        Because I’m heartless!

      • 221 InfiniteZip July 11, 2014 at 13:39

no, no I don’t think so at all…you’re breathing, right? there for the ticker must still be ticking:)

      • 222 Professor VJ Duke July 12, 2014 at 01:28

*laughs* It is flawless logic, Zippy. But I don’t like it one dadblame bit!

      • 223 InfiniteZip July 12, 2014 at 11:27

ohh, bad words again…..I like logic…so did Spock:)

      • 224 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 12:39

He did! How about the professor?

      • 225 InfiniteZip July 14, 2014 at 13:06

He is most logical most of the time and then when he isn’t he has lightbulb moments that shed light on the logic overlooked:)

      • 226 Professor VJ Duke July 14, 2014 at 19:35

Well thank you, Zippy, I’d say that’s quite nice overall. Shall we go hunt some unicorns?

      • 227 InfiniteZip July 14, 2014 at 20:15

We don’t hunt them, we are blessed with their presence, just like you are to me:) would you hunt a castle dweller?

      • 228 Professor VJ Duke July 15, 2014 at 12:43

Aw, that’s so nice! You are to me as well. *bows* Oh, okay, we shan’t do it then. Well, depends. The professor wouldn’t hunt you…but what if some really wicked king needs a hunting?

      • 229 InfiniteZip July 15, 2014 at 17:34

I would help you with that, hold your shield or something I suppose:)

      • 230 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 00:33

It’d be great fun, you know.

      • 231 InfiniteZip July 16, 2014 at 09:01

But what about the blood and gore?”shivers”

      • 232 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 13:04

Oh, I didn’t think about that. Would it bother you?

      • 233 InfiniteZip July 16, 2014 at 15:50

it may be slimy and icky….

      • 234 Professor VJ Duke July 16, 2014 at 17:45

        Well…perhaps no battles then?

      • 235 InfiniteZip July 16, 2014 at 19:30

        A game of chess?

      • 236 Professor VJ Duke July 17, 2014 at 00:19

        Yes, I’ll settle for that!

  20. 237 Anja July 8, 2014 at 12:19

I think it is about balance. There are times you put someones needs a head of yours but you have to take care of yourself as well. Selfishness conjures up a bad feel but I have learned after 41 years that sometimes, you have to step back and be selfish.

    • 238 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 12:34

Hi Anja! How interesting! I love your conclusion at the end. I remember my guitar teacher telling me that sometimes you do have to be selfish. Balance. That’s the ticket, you’re quite right. But how do you know when it’s the right thing to do?

      • 239 Anja July 8, 2014 at 12:42

I just read this amazing article about learning to be selfish and made a list d things you should not apologize for in life. It has things as simple as allowing yourself to say no to people. I’m typically one who tries to please everyone but have learned to step back and put me first.
When is it wrong to be selfish? I think when you use to to intentionally hurt someone.

      • 240 Professor VJ Duke July 8, 2014 at 15:58

Aha! Yes, saying no. One shouldn’t feel bad for that. Unless you’re saying no to yourself. Wait…that can’t be right either. *shakes head* What a confusing thing!

      • 241 Anja July 9, 2014 at 02:05

        It’s selfless to be selfish?

      • 242 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:33

Oh no, Anja! What a hard question. Is it?

      • 243 Anja July 9, 2014 at 13:34

        I’m asking you!!!

      • 244 Professor VJ Duke July 9, 2014 at 13:49

Okay, then, I”d say no. Am I right?
