What a lot of guitars and books!

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke February 3, 2015 at 19:18

I know, right? You would have loved it.

      • 3 Catherine February 6, 2015 at 04:20

It does sound like a lovely place!

      • 4 Professor VJ Duke February 7, 2015 at 04:08

        PA’s better!

      • 5 Catherine February 9, 2015 at 03:23

Is it? (I’ve never been there, you know, so I wouldn’t know)

      • 6 Professor VJ Duke February 9, 2015 at 22:33

Well, that’s where I live, so I’m biased!

      • 7 Catherine February 12, 2015 at 02:46

I see. Is it as big as LA?

      • 8 Professor VJ Duke February 12, 2015 at 21:20

*shakes head* Nah, LA is way, way bigger.

      • 9 Catherine February 20, 2015 at 02:42

Then I think I’d like it! LA is rather too big for me.

      • 10 Professor VJ Duke February 20, 2015 at 02:42

        Yeah, me too!

  2. 11 Jackie January 28, 2015 at 15:08

You know this might surprise you but I have been to a NAMM show. It was a long, long, long time ago but I remember the event fondly. Which is not the way I remember my life at the time I’m sorry to say. BUT that is a whole nother story or I should say saga that is best left untold for now.

AnKneeWay – Not sure if your back from the show or not but if you are still there I hope you’re having a lovely time. See you soon!

    • 12 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:46

No way!!! That is awesome. Wow…were you in the music business a bit? Was it busy when you were there? You know, Jackie, you made the professor so, so interested. And curious.

I am back! Back to the snow.

      • 13 Jackie January 28, 2015 at 23:51

I was yes – it was just a short while. I was a singer in a band and had a recording studio in my garage. Yes it was very busy!

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 00:13

Wow. That’s cool. Yeah, I think I was almost crushed between the crowds.

  3. 15 Lady Cheetah7 January 26, 2015 at 23:08

Coolio…..If you become famous don’t forget about us little PL’ers…

    • 16 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:49

Little PL’ers? You guys mean the world to me.

      • 17 Lady Cheetah7 January 28, 2015 at 14:17

        :-)

  4. 18 Nancy Loderick January 26, 2015 at 21:38

Well Professor, if I were you, I would stay in LA. As you probably know, the Northeast is in the throws of a BIG blizzard. Geesh, you’d think we’ve never seen snow before.

But, given that, even the smog in LA would be preferable to digging out from several feet of snow.

    Nancy

    • 19 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:43

True. The snow is so cold…but you must admit that you love it!

  5. 20 erinkenobi2893 January 26, 2015 at 16:36

Exciting! And there are guitars there? Neat! :-D

    • 21 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:59

There were guitars everywhere! It was quite amazing.

      • 22 erinkenobi2893 January 27, 2015 at 12:01

        Sounds like it was fun!

      • 23 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:52

It was. But I almost got crushed three times in a crowd.

      • 24 erinkenobi2893 January 28, 2015 at 03:12

Ooooh… crowds. I’m not good at that.

      • 25 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:32

Yeah…I wanted to kill a few, you know.

      • 26 erinkenobi2893 January 28, 2015 at 15:09

        0_0 That’s scary.

      • 27 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:46

*smiles proudly* I suppose I am–now that you mention it.

      • 28 erinkenobi2893 January 29, 2015 at 02:23

        Dear me.

  6. 29 TheCrazyBagLady January 25, 2015 at 18:00

I learnt something new from the prof today. NAMM. I thought it meant nasty awful mean men

    • 30 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:58

*laughing* The professor is an awful beast, huh?

      • 31 TheCrazyBagLady January 27, 2015 at 18:43

Well I have my suspicions. Are you?

      • 32 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:53

Umm… *laughs* What do you suppose?

      • 33 TheCrazyBagLady January 28, 2015 at 10:37

I have a theory but I need more evidence

      • 34 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:36

Can I please hear it? *interested professor eyes*

      • 35 TheCrazyBagLady January 28, 2015 at 17:15

Well I think the professor is a deviant but have moments of kindness.

      • 36 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:59

Yes, that’s it! Plus, I’m like Hector, right?

  7. 37 Simply Skeptical January 24, 2015 at 12:16

Is it very exciting? Looks like guitar heaven. Are the characters at this NAMM as unusual as those in the PL? Stay safe Prof.!

    • 38 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:56

Sure are! And even worse, I think!

  8. 39 FictionFan January 23, 2015 at 17:28

Just tell me one thing – Amelia’s not with you, is she??? *grinds teeth*

(I may have to learn to play the banjo, so I can review the books.)

Have a great time, and don’t be making your old guitars too jealous…

    • 40 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:56

No, of course not. Should she be?

(*laughs* You’d choose that over the ukulele, mandolin, and guitar?!)

      I tried not to…but I couldn’t help it. I think they’ll be mad.

      • 41 FictionFan January 26, 2015 at 22:46

No, she should not!!! Though you could have taken her with you… and then left her there…

(Somehow it sounds easier! Plus Bertie Wooster played the banjo… )

Well, so long as you didn’t kiss them, I suppose! So – did you have a great time? Did LA survive? Did you get up to any adventures fit to print?

      • 42 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:48

Then I would have had to sit next to her on the plane…

(*laughs* You know, it was the easiest for me. Wooster? *googles* The things you know!)

I was tempted. They were quite beautifully awesome. Played like gems. Especially the one that was $10,000. LA did! Though, I’m not sure…I hope we didn’t disease them. Well, sure are! But I don’t know if I can tell them.

      • 43 FictionFan January 28, 2015 at 11:08

Nonsense! You could have stuffed her in the baggage hold! *imagines her coming out on the baggage carousel and laughs and laughs*

(Really? I think we need a video of a banjo-playing Professor, and mandolin and ukelele. Though not necessarily all at the same time. You should read some Wooster…)

You should have stolen it! Nick could have created a diversion with his swishy brushy things. Did you get to try any spiffy clarinets? Oh dear, is the poor Professor diseased? *concerned face* Oooh, now that makes me even keener to hear them…

      • 44 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:43

*laughing lots and lots too* That is a great picture, I admit.

(Well, keep in mind I did now how to play guitar, and that was the closest to the guitar. Nah, I’m not that good. They’re horrid little instruments. Wooster? He looks boring!)

*laughs* I think they would have killed me. But I was tempted! I looked at a few clarinets. Since I didn’t bring my mouthpiece, though, I didn’t try any. Nah, not diseased, though it is sweet you semi care. I know!

      • 45 FictionFan January 28, 2015 at 23:39

Hey! You didn’t defend her! *smiles like Woola when he’s just been given 5 new pairs of socks*

I must admit the banjo always sounds kinda funny. Wooster is not boring! PG Wodehouse is the man who said “It is never difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine.”

Oh, do you need to have your own mouthpiece? How…strange. And yet I suppose it makes a certain kind of sense… I do care! I’d hate to think of a diseased Professor! *laughs lots* You are so, so, so, so, SO mean!!!

      • 46 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 00:12

Of course not. I told you I don’t like her one bit. But you won’t believe me. I think she hates me too.

The banjo is so…ugh! Hmm…I think I’ll have to think on that for some time. Maybe lots of time. It’s a zinger.

Yes… *laughs* Everyone does. Horn players are usually so specific about it too. Some like theirs to be glass, rubber, etc. It’s like a game. Maybe I’m already diseased! You’ll get to know soon. Promise. Just need to work it all out in my mind. Should I show any pictures? That’s the question.

      • 47 FictionFan January 29, 2015 at 13:08

She does not! She’s just using her womanly wiles to catch you in her web…

He also said ‘I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.’ Doesn’t that sound almost Professorish?

Glass?? That really does sound odd! What’s yours? Are we talking physically or mentally? Yes, pictures!!! And we want at least one of Nick too! With or without swirly, brushy things…

      • 48 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 21:47

Then what will she do? You should save me, you know. *laughing*

Wow. It is close. The intonation is off, wouldn’t you say?

It is odd! Mine is just…plastic, I believe. I haven’t really bought into the mouthpiece thing. I don’t know. Mentally! *gulps* Well, maybe…are you absolutely sure?

  9. 49 L. Marie January 23, 2015 at 15:44

    Awesome!!! Enjoy the show!
I don’t think the guitar player looks weird at all. Perhaps if he had been tossing a knife up and down, that would have been weird.

    • 50 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:52

That’s true. Imagine the damage he could inflict with a knife on those poor, defenseless guitars! *shudders*

      • 51 L. Marie January 26, 2015 at 21:26

All of that string cutting would be unpleasant.

      • 52 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:42

Oh no! That’s horrid just thinking on.

  10. 53 InfiniteZip January 23, 2015 at 10:29

Is,the the North American Manly Man show???.

    • 54 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:18

*laughs* Nah, that’s not it at all. Imagine if it was!

      • 55 InfiniteZip January 26, 2015 at 18:33

Then I guess if it was, wished I had been there to see that show🎸

      • 56 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 19:00

        And why is that?

      • 57 InfiniteZip January 27, 2015 at 10:17

Guitars and manly men are cool…especially if they have long hair and mustaches and purple pants.

      • 58 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:52

        Purple pants?! Yucketh!!!

  11. 59 PorterGirl January 23, 2015 at 08:19

This. Is. Fabulous! Although I was rather befuddled not to find out the next bit of the story, this excitement really does make up for it. So pleased to see that the haircut came along, too. It adds some much-needed class and respectability to LA. The guitars are pant-wettingly great. I am super, super jealous. Have a marvellous time!

    • 60 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:17

They are! Alhambra guitars, too! *looks lovingly at all of the* Yeah, there were a lot of creatures walking around, that’s for sure.

  12. 61 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 23, 2015 at 05:28

Ooo, how was the flight? Exciting, I bet. Best of luck, Duketh!! I look forward to hearing more about all the guitarists you have the pleasure of meeting, more so, the guitars you get to meet. Very cool!

Those crooked books look like gems to me.
    That man seems intense. ..
That man’s fingers must be tired…
    That man stole someone’s glasses!

    • 62 SusanP January 24, 2015 at 16:33

I bet it is warmer in LA than it is in the PL. I anxiously await the next episode of the story and even maybe a report of the show! Be safe and have fun!

      • 63 SusanP January 26, 2015 at 16:44

        *tapping foot*

      • 64 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:59

        On George’s tail, I bet!

      • 65 SusanP January 26, 2015 at 19:18

No. I don’t think so. He would protest. He’s already been giving me The Look.

      • 66 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:42

        The Look of Love?

      • 67 Susan P January 28, 2015 at 14:12

        More like he wants out.

      • 68 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:45

See, you need some snow. That would deter him.

      • 69 Susan P January 28, 2015 at 15:55

No snow. Not unless there is a fireplace and popcorn and marshmallows.

      • 70 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:55

        And beer.

      • 71 Susan P January 29, 2015 at 02:51

I’d rather have hard cider, please.

      • 72 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 21:36

        Okay, then, if you’re sure…

      • 73 Susan P September 9, 2016 at 16:10

        hahahaha

      • 74 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:57

You’re right I should do a report! But I’d have to show lots of pics…is that okay, do you suppose?

Ah, yes, the story. I’ll get that up this week. Promise twice!

      • 75 SusanP January 26, 2015 at 19:17

I daresay we can handle lots of pictures…especially pictures of that interesting fellow playing the guitar. ;)

      • 76 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:41

        Ooo…okay! Maybe… *nervous* I don’t know… I’ll post a picture of the Rock.

      • 77 Susan P January 28, 2015 at 14:12

        You mean Dwayne Johnson?

      • 78 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:45

        Yes, that’s the one!

      • 79 Susan P January 28, 2015 at 15:53

He’s not hideous. Why don’t you want his picture?

      • 80 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:54

Have you seen his big tattoo?

      • 81 Susan P January 29, 2015 at 02:50

The one with Puff the Magic Dragon on it?

      • 82 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 21:36

*laughs* Now that would be cool.

      • 83 Susan P September 9, 2016 at 16:10

        That would be a treat.

      • 84 Susan P January 28, 2015 at 14:35

        Still waiting…

      • 85 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:45

        What for?

      • 86 Susan P January 28, 2015 at 15:55

        The rest of the story…

      • 87 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:55

        Is..?

      • 88 Susan P January 29, 2015 at 02:53

        I don’t know. I saw today’s installment, though. TPL

      • 89 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 21:36

And? What thinkest thou of it?

      • 90 Susan P September 9, 2016 at 16:10

As a cow thinks; slowly and determinedly.

    • 91 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:12

The flight was exciting! Much more exciting on the way back. The turbulence was awfully great. I felt like I was on a roller coaster, I must admit. I did get to meet a bunch of acoustic guitarists! How’d you know? I probably said it somewhere.

Well, I was playing Alhambra guitars! It was awesome. The glasses? *laughs* I nabbed them, yes.

      • 92 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 27, 2015 at 00:17

Glad your flight was a roller coaster, Duke. Seems like a fun way to go, in my opinion. You did? Where the guitarists as good as you? How’d I know what??

Sounds like an important guitar. Glad you enjoyed playing. It figures…you would steal the first cool set of glasses you could find.

      • 93 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:50

*laughs* Fun? It was. But also a bit nerve-wracking. Umm…I can’t answer that! The guitarists were Andy McKee and Antione Dufour. They’re famous.

Yes! Swiped them right from an old lady.

      • 94 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 28, 2015 at 04:49

Yes, you’ve mentioned how much fun the middle part of flying can be, you know. So you don’t know if you were as good, if not better than those two? Famous just means they were in the right place at the right time. Like you’ll be one day…if you haven’t been already.

How wicked of you. Must have been a cool old lady.

      • 95 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 14:34

I know I have. But I must admit, I might have slept through some of that. Nah, I usually don’t do that sort of thing. Here’s how I figure it: I play as I play, I have fun, and that’s all that matters. They’re more like steel string new-age acoustic players. I like to refer to myself as a classical/pop guitarist. Isn’t that cool?

        Okay! They’re mine.

      • 96 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 28, 2015 at 21:16

I wish I could sleep on planes. I usually end up chatting with the guy holding the newspaper. You have the best attitude, about your playing, Sir. *smiles* I bet you were awesome. Classical/pop sounds perfect to me.

I knew it!! They suit your intensity.

      • 97 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 00:03

*laughs* That is so Audith! Thank you, Audith. It’s the only way to look at it, I think, when you’re in my position. Nice! I love the title too.

They were the first ones I saw. And I said, “Those are perfect.”

      • 98 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 29, 2015 at 01:57

Laughable, I know. I think in any position when we’re threatened to be judged against others. I mean, seriously. Happens every day, so we have to figure we’re okay with ourselves as we are. Others will or will not agree, but we’ll still be whobwe are, right? So forget about it. Someone will appreciate you just as you are and then you will skyrocket into the business, so they say, if you haven’t already. A very cool title.

Very suave of you. Mostly, you didn’t want to mess with the process, I bet.

      • 99 Professor VJ Duke January 29, 2015 at 21:33

It’s great, I’d say. You make friends wherever you go! That’s right on right on. Your poem was about that a bit. A lot, actually. That’s why I loved it. Audith, your faith in me means a lot! Seriously. And thank you.

*laughs* Yes, I wasn’t going to try tons of frames on!

      • 100 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 30, 2015 at 06:13

I try to, Duke. Making friends is the easy part. I’m glad you liked it, Duketh. When you’re sweet I blush, so enough already, Mr. Heartless. You’re welcome. Always.

Why not? Tis the fun part!!!

      • 101 Professor VJ Duke January 30, 2015 at 21:23

I am heartless! I think you want me to be that way.

        Is not! Waste of time!

      • 102 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister January 31, 2015 at 02:55

No I do not! Can’t believe you would even suggest it.

I love it. The only real fun shopping that there is, Duketh.

      • 103 Professor VJ Duke February 1, 2015 at 19:42

        Oh dear… *slinks away*

I’m surprised! Ladies usually like all types of shopping.

      • 104 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister February 1, 2015 at 20:46

To suggest such a thing after months of trying to find it. How rude. *kicks the dirt*

        Yes, most do, you’re right.

      • 105 Professor VJ Duke February 2, 2015 at 22:26

I did that for your benefit.

That’s rather cool, I must admit.

      • 106 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister February 3, 2015 at 04:01

My benefit? How so… *figures he’ll say what she anticipates him saying*

        *rolls her eyes*

      • 107 Professor VJ Duke February 3, 2015 at 19:21

I always say that thing. It throws people off a bit.

      • 108 Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister February 3, 2015 at 22:22

        Truer than true

  13. 109 E. January 23, 2015 at 05:04

That is one handsome gentleman playing the guitar! Have fun in LA, Professor!

    • 110 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:10

Hey, E! I think he was quite happy testing all the guitars out. It was too fun. Almost made me want to nab a few, you know.

Hope you have an awesomely fabulous time!!!

    • 112 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:10

Thanks so much, Julie! It was quite an adventure. And great fun.

Be careful in LA. hope you brought your cane, Yes that guitar player looks weird. looks life a professor out of uniform.

    • 114 Professor VJ Duke January 23, 2015 at 02:47

I forgot my cane. (My sword cane.) I do wish you would have reminded me.

Yes, he sure does. I should slap him, huh?

  16. 115 Angeline M January 23, 2015 at 01:53

Did you see the sign when you entered LA that said do not enter for fear? Hmm….I thought not. You are in near proximity to the better part of California where I am, the Northern part; such a pity. And just to put it out there…what’s a NAMM?

    • 116 Professor VJ Duke January 23, 2015 at 02:47

*laughing lots* That is such a good point. I’m close to where you’re at? Nice! Where are you at?

NAMM is the largest music conference in the world. It’s right next to Disneyland. Have you ever been to Disneyland?

      • 117 Angeline M January 23, 2015 at 18:07

I’m right outside San Francisco. I used to live in Orange County so paid respects to Dland many times.

      • 118 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:56

Orange county, cool. I was real close to there. How’s the weather in San Fran?

      • 119 Angeline M January 26, 2015 at 20:39

Beaytifully sunny and warm for this time of year!

      • 120 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 01:42

Nice. Have you walked along the beach at all?

      • 121 Angeline M January 28, 2015 at 17:12

        Oh yes. My favorite thing.

      • 122 Professor VJ Duke January 28, 2015 at 23:58

        Yeah, that is tops.

Now that middle column is an interest. So many options for the banjo, mandolin, and ukelele that I wouldn’t know how to choose just one. You must acquire them all, by any means necessary. Use your moves!

    • 124 Professor VJ Duke January 23, 2015 at 02:46

Well, I have the four red ones. I wrote them, see.

      • 125 walt walker January 23, 2015 at 04:08

Well! I’ll be hornswaggled! Well done, sir! Well done indeed! That is quite something. I hope you sell lots and lots of them! What an interest!

      • 126 Professor VJ Duke January 26, 2015 at 18:10

*smiles bigly* Thanks, Mr. Walt. It is an interest, I admit.

  18. 127 Debbie January 23, 2015 at 01:47

Ooh, I get to be first!! You must have been in hog-heaven with all those guitars nearby, Professor! Enjoy your trip — thanks for letting us know. Looks like you’ve avoided a confrontation with the inhabitants of that lady-city!!

    • 128 Professor VJ Duke January 23, 2015 at 02:46

I sure was! That one is a $10,000 guitar! And it was so special to play. I might steal some and have a run in with the LAPD.

Oh, that will continue next week. I’m something of a time traveler.
