Mr. Ratherquite Lectures (TPL Story) [feat. Sweet Home Alabama]

TPLStoryPic

Rats and a heifer.

Sometimes, that’s the best thing one can say.

So, here the professor was, sitting in a lecture hall with a bunch of other bored lads and ladies.

Unknown

We were all so bored we couldn’t believe it.

Now, we were bored because Mr. Ratherquite was lecturing about the lives of guinea pigs.

“You must understand,” he said, “guinea pigs aren’t like regular pigs at all. Yes, that’s true. They’re not rude and crude; they don’t roll in the mud. They’re also not pink. And…on top of that, they’ve got fur. And…they’re much smaller!”

guinea-pig2-source_wa8

Wow, I thought. Such revelations, I can’t believe it.

Dadblameit.

Now, this other fellow, next to me, was doing something on his phone.

He was smiling.

“What’s up?” I asked.

He nodded. “You bored too? Look what I found on the web.”

And he showed me this:

I must say, it was quite more enjoyable than the lecture.

Now, we were so involved in the video that we hadn’t noticed Mr. Ratherquite standing over us until the video had ended.

“Goodness me,” I said. “Quick, there’s something behind you.”

He didn’t fall for it.

“You two,” he said, “are penalized.”

Big thanks to Susan Price for the story idea here! Sorry it took me so long to put it together; that’s what the professorish brain does for you.

Mr. Ratherquite is penalized for boring his audience. And I’m the Fascination Police. *flashes psychic paper*

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:36

Yes, please get rid of him, I say.

      • 3 erinkenobi2893 October 2, 2015 at 13:48

I will! *pushes him out the door, then dusts off hands* :-P

      • 4 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 20:21

That’s the spirit I love to see.

      • 5 erinkenobi2893 October 2, 2015 at 20:36

        :-D

Rats and a heifer- best line ever!

    • 7 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 20:41

Doesn’t it just get all the emotion across?

      • 8 Lady Dunamis August 27, 2015 at 21:58

        Indeed.

      • 9 Professor VJ Duke August 28, 2015 at 12:52

        Indeedy indeed.

  3. 10 Simply Skeptical August 24, 2015 at 10:01

I’ve owned guinea pigs going back to my youthful years. My dog tolerated my pigs I used to put them on her back and take pictures, but my pigs fought male and female. She was actually a witch in disguise; he loved her though. Neptune & Cleo if you must know.
You make playing complex arrangements look easy. Unique approach to famous tunes; much enjoyed.

    • 11 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:59

Haha, pigs fighting! Now that is something I’d want to see. Good names for them, too.

Well, thanks bunches. But I’m not sure that’s me.

  4. 12 Nancy Loderick August 23, 2015 at 16:38

    Hey Professor,

Cute story, or should I say, “cute guinea pig.” Actually, these creatures remind me of our chipmunks. :)

    Nancy
P.S. Okay, so this post really has nothing to do with your blog post, it all ties back to my chipmunks. . .

    • 13 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:57

Now, do you battle your chipmunks lots?

      • 14 Nancy Loderick August 24, 2015 at 20:23

        Well Professor,

The only battles we have with our beloved chipmunks is getting them to eat some healthy fruit like blueberries and grapes. They much prefer peanut treats, but even chipmunks need to have balanced diets!

        Nancy

      • 15 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:17

Can’t believe they like peanut butter! *gags* But someone’s got to eat it, I suppose.

  5. 16 bardictale August 23, 2015 at 12:08

My friend’s friend has a guinea pig that wears a tutu.

    • 17 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:48

Now, are you joking with me? How awesome would that be!

      • 18 bardictale August 25, 2015 at 18:46

Tis the truth! I’ve seen it with my own two eyes.

      • 19 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:23

        Did you laugh or cry?

      • 20 bardictale August 26, 2015 at 17:34

Neither. I couldn’t laugh, or I’d offend the sorceress (bad business that) and crying wasn’t appropriate either.

      • 21 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 21:03

        Maybe you could’ve coughed?

      • 22 bardictale August 30, 2015 at 06:25

        I gulped. Does that count?

      • 23 Professor VJ Duke August 31, 2015 at 19:58

For sure. It’s a better sound, I say.

      • 24 bardictale September 1, 2015 at 21:05

Good to know, sir. Would you gulp?

      • 25 Professor VJ Duke September 1, 2015 at 21:42

I would try not to, but it’s quite fun isn’t it?

      • 26 bardictale September 1, 2015 at 21:45

        Indeed. Especially ice tea!

      • 27 Professor VJ Duke September 2, 2015 at 18:39

        I agree! Let’s gulp away.

  6. 28 InfiniteZip August 23, 2015 at 11:19

I love fuzzy pigs….why does the young guitar lad not sing?

    • 29 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:48

I’m not sure. Do you suppose he should?

      • 30 InfiniteZip August 25, 2015 at 10:33

I wonder if he can? He should at least try….maybe sing some Elvis or something…the ladies would swoon I would think😎

      • 31 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:26

What sort of Elvis songs, would you say?

      • 32 InfiniteZip August 25, 2015 at 15:30

If I can dream? Burning love? Hmmmm how about love me tender by candlelight?

      • 33 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:13

If I can Dream! Love that song. Burning Love is hilarious, wouldn’t you say, Zippy?

      • 34 InfiniteZip August 26, 2015 at 13:03

Hunk a hunk a burning love owwwww…..my dog howls to it🐕

      • 35 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 20:51

Now that is something! How hilarious.

  7. 36 walt walker August 23, 2015 at 07:09

Well now that was very good, right there. But with all those guitars to choose from, why did the fellow pick that one, I wonder? And what kind of store was that? Cracker Barrell? All these shops full of things confuse me. What is a Lynyrd Skynryd, for example. Who are you, are you…who who. Who who. I really wanna know. Forgive me. I’m talking nonsense because it’s late and I drove a long way home in traffic and there was a collision (not involving me). I’m spent. Good night!

Some fine pluckin’ up above. Mighty fine.

    • 37 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:48

*laughing* I wanted to film that in CB originally! Funny you should know that. But, actually, twas a guitar shop, because of the guitars. I think the chap chose that guitar…’cause it was the prettiest!

I bet the boomerang likes it.

  8. 38 Susan P August 22, 2015 at 12:43

A delightful turn of events, PVJ! And stop telling people it was my fault. ;)

    • 39 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:30

*laughs* But wasn’t it, just a bit?

      • 40 Susan P August 22, 2015 at 18:07

        Weeeelllll. Maybe a smidgen.

      • 41 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:40

And maybe even some more than that!

      • 42 Susan P August 24, 2015 at 22:02

I can’t help it that I have a busy brain.

      • 43 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:19

That’s a good thing. Don’t let it explode tho.

      • 44 Susan P August 25, 2015 at 13:25

        Whever not?

      • 45 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:33

        Imagine the mess!

      • 46 Susan P August 25, 2015 at 13:35

Ah, that is the fun part.

      • 47 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:06

        So says George.

  9. 48 L. Marie August 21, 2015 at 19:48

That was MUCH more enjoyable that Mr. Ratherquite lecture, despite the adorableness of that guinea pig. Wow, wow, wow!!!!

    • 49 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:25

Thanks lots, Linda! We were bored, see. Very bored and quite wicked. So, we search the web. Do you like Lynyrd Skynyrd?

      • 50 L. Marie August 24, 2015 at 13:42

        Yes indeed!!!

      • 51 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:59

        They are awesome!

  10. 52 John W. Howell August 21, 2015 at 19:11

So good. I was mesmerized and gobsmacked all at the same time. Thanks.

    • 53 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:24

Thank you, my man! I was gobsmacked too. Can you believe that stool hurt?

      • 54 John W. Howell August 22, 2015 at 20:13

Of course it did. You need more suitable surroundings.

      • 55 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:43

Yes, like a recliner, I”m thinking.

      • 56 John W. Howell August 24, 2015 at 21:28

hmmm with a cup hold I suppose.

      • 57 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:18

Definitely. Must take a drink every so often.

      • 58 John W. Howell August 25, 2015 at 14:55

Need two then. One for the drink and one for the chips.

      • 59 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:10

Quite right. Can’t have the chips in the drink, after all.

      • 60 John W. Howell August 26, 2015 at 12:38

Or the drink in the chips

      • 61 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 20:50

Which is probably more awful than the other, I’m thinking.

      • 62 John W. Howell August 26, 2015 at 22:56

Yes. Nothing like a bowl of chips whit a drink poured in the middle.

      • 63 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 12:34

It’s an experience one is bound not to forget. Goodness.

      • 64 John W. Howell August 27, 2015 at 12:35

Especially if the drink is Kool-aid (grape)

      • 65 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 12:39

That stuff is so strong and sweet.

      • 66 John W. Howell August 27, 2015 at 12:51

The point precisely. Imagine strong, sweet, grape flavored chips.

      • 67 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 20:34

Well…if they were soggy…yucketh, if they were dry…I might try it!

      • 68 John W. Howell August 27, 2015 at 20:41

        Sorry soggy rules.

      • 69 Professor VJ Duke August 28, 2015 at 12:50

        Goodness. You can’t be serious!

      • 70 John W. Howell August 28, 2015 at 12:56

        On this example

  11. 71 FictionFan August 21, 2015 at 15:19

Brilliant, C-W-W! As always! A great start to the weekend – thank you! *dances happily*

    • 72 Professor VJ Duke August 21, 2015 at 17:07

Dances too? *laughs* Super. The best part was when I was searching for a guitar and I got to use Star Wars swipes…

      • 73 FictionFan August 21, 2015 at 19:02

Bet even you would dance to that music! In fact, I bet if Nick had panned down (like the jargon there?) your little feet were dancing away there… I have no idea what that means! Star Wars swipes??

      • 74 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:24

That’s excellent jargon! Exactly how we say it, in fact… *impressed professor* I may have been dancing…but you will never know!

Yes, you know: In most of the Star Wars movies, they have these screen swipes to change scenes.

      • 75 FictionFan August 23, 2015 at 15:21

*preens* But I have an excellent imagination… *watches imaginary Professor dance* The real star of this video is the guitar though – much more gorgeous even than the Professor! And smooth… and very cool… *swoons*

Aha! I see! But… I’ve only seen one Star Wars film and that was… ahem… a few years ago.

      • 76 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:57

It is! So…amazing. That’s Kremona craftsmanship for you. Amazing. Splendid. If the guitar was a woman…I’d marry it!

You’ll just have to see the one coming out on Dec. 18th, then.

      • 77 FictionFan August 25, 2015 at 00:01

Good noodles!! Don’t tell me I have to be jealous of your guitar too now!!! *regretfully prepares blancmange but just can’t bring herself to throw it* Mind you, if it was a man, I might marry it myself… or at least go out on a few dates! Can it cut grass?

A new Star Wars film? But that would mean I’d have to watch all the other ones first… *dies*

      • 78 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:24

I’m jealous of it, so you should be! *laughs* It probably is a man. I haven’t named it yet, though. I’m not sure. Wouldn’t it be something if it could? I probably wouldn’t let it, though.

Oh! That’d be cool. You’d get to see my man Mace Windu. There is a sickening little romance, I must add. But the lightsaber fights are awesome!

      • 79 FictionFan August 25, 2015 at 17:14

You shouldn’t be jealous of it! It’s only as wonderful as it is because of the talent of the player! Otherwise it would just be a piece of wood… Ooh, what will you name it? *waits excitedly*

*sobs and hides* But… Princess Leia… and the hairdo…

      • 80 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:20

Oh, I don’t know. It really makes me sound good, I must admit. But together, we are a good team, I’m thinking. I’m not sure! What does one name a guitar? Maybe Craig. Or Fuzz.

*laughs* Yes, I remember your pain with that. Well, your name is way nicer than that, so that’s good. Plus, just watch the newer ones. Only Padme is in that.

  12. 81 Heartafire August 21, 2015 at 15:17

Totally blown away, professor! Hats off to you!

    • 82 Professor VJ Duke August 21, 2015 at 17:06

*bows* Why thanks bunches, Hollie! Does it make you want to play?

      • 83 Heartafire August 21, 2015 at 17:18

I’m not much of a player, but willing to learn. My Dad was a fine musician too …*bows*

      • 84 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:15

Was he really? Cool. What’d he play? But you’re such a cool watercolor painter!

      • 85 Heartafire August 22, 2015 at 20:22

He played bass, and a very cool Spanish guitar. His name was Carlos, I thought that a strange name for a Welshman, perhaps his mother loved Spain. .

      • 86 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:46

Carlos is such a great name, though, I’m thinking.Bass and Spanish guitar! That is cool. Which did you like better?

      • 87 Heartafire August 24, 2015 at 19:48

Hi Prof, I liked the Spanish guitar he always played that when he thought no one was around. :-)

      • 88 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:59

Hey Hollie! I imagine it was peaceful and beautiful. Hmm…makes me want to hear it, the sudden.

      • 89 Heartafire August 24, 2015 at 20:04

It was quite lovely… He was in a band, had some gigs too, a pastime. I miss that, the sudden. Oh, my I am speaking Professorish. Bows.

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:16

You are! And you’re doing quite well at it, might I say. How nice. Did you go to hear him often?

      • 91 Heartafire August 25, 2015 at 13:18

I would play his recordings…he is gone now, passed away, I am an orphan. Bummer.

      • 92 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:28

Aw! That makes me a bit sad. He recorded? That’s good.

      • 93 Heartafire August 25, 2015 at 13:32

Don’t be sad! Polish your katana, that will make you feel better. I am pulling out old memorabilia, I enjoy a good cry.

      • 94 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:34

But don’t cry! *hands Hollie a cherry sucker* That should help, I’m thinking.

      • 95 Heartafire August 25, 2015 at 13:36

Oh, you always know the perfect picker-upper, thank you Professor.

      • 96 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:06

Oh great! Yes, a cherry sucker always makes me spicy.

      • 97 Heartafire August 26, 2015 at 12:58

I does indeed lift the spirits, yummy!

      • 98 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 20:50

        *gets one for himself*

      • 99 Heartafire August 26, 2015 at 20:51

        enjoy professor, make it last.

      • 100 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 21:04

I shall give it a lick every 2 minutes.

      • 101 Heartafire August 26, 2015 at 21:15

        You are talented.

      • 102 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 12:32

It’s definitely a hard task, you know.

      • 103 Heartafire August 27, 2015 at 13:15

I can imagine you would need a stop watch with an alarm.

      • 104 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 20:34

Or, be able to count in your head quickly, I’m thinking.

      • 105 Heartafire August 27, 2015 at 20:46

        Ha! Dying

      • 106 Professor VJ Duke August 28, 2015 at 12:50

        Don’t die!

      • 107 Heartafire August 28, 2015 at 13:37

        hyperventilating, paper bag, quick.

      • 108 Professor VJ Duke August 31, 2015 at 19:43

        Here!

      • 109 Heartafire August 31, 2015 at 20:04

        gasp! thank you.

      • 110 Professor VJ Duke August 31, 2015 at 20:13

        And…a cherry sucker.

      • 111 Heartafire August 31, 2015 at 20:20

you’re too good to me…tearing up.

      • 112 Professor VJ Duke September 1, 2015 at 11:44

Well, I took half of it.

      • 113 Heartafire September 1, 2015 at 14:23

I know… you love cherry suckers!

      • 114 Professor VJ Duke September 1, 2015 at 21:34

I love them more than…the katana!

      • 115 Heartafire September 1, 2015 at 21:42

more than the katana…holy….that’s some serious love.

      • 116 Professor VJ Duke September 1, 2015 at 21:43

Isn’t it? I should be proud.

      • 117 Heartafire September 1, 2015 at 21:48

you’re a good man, Mr. professor, but hang on to that katana.

      • 118 Professor VJ Duke September 2, 2015 at 18:40

You’re right, I shall do it. Can’t bear for it to get lost.

      • 119 Heartafire September 2, 2015 at 18:42

        no way, it’s mine!

      • 120 Professor VJ Duke September 2, 2015 at 18:51

You tricked me and stole my precious!

      • 121 Heartafire September 2, 2015 at 18:57

Hang in till Christmas, I may be feeling generous. Meanwhile it hangs above my fireplace. Oh, it is lovely.

      • 122 Professor VJ Duke September 3, 2015 at 12:48

*mouth drops to the dirt and worms* I just might come and steal it!

      • 123 Heartafire September 3, 2015 at 13:07

I have polished it, wrapped it in silk, and of course, I’m sure you know this) it’s blade must never be touched by hands, it awaits you. Cleaning instructions can be found on line. :-)

      • 124 Professor VJ Duke September 3, 2015 at 22:54

Oh goody. Was it very dirty with blood?

      • 125 Heartafire September 3, 2015 at 23:57

I used it…lets just leave it at that.

      • 126 Professor VJ Duke September 4, 2015 at 12:09

Now, now, Hollie. You know I must have details!

      • 127 Heartafire September 4, 2015 at 12:53

I met DS at a church revival, we discussed. He says I am out of control, imagine that. He agreed to see it your way.

      • 128 Professor VJ Duke September 4, 2015 at 19:53

Good job, I say! So, he listened to you, then?

      • 129 Heartafire September 4, 2015 at 20:28

        in between hymns.

      • 130 Professor VJ Duke September 7, 2015 at 15:22

*laughs* And that is just the place he might go, don’t you know.

      • 131 Heartafire September 7, 2015 at 15:26

It was peaceful there, the ladies in hats, the men in suits, DS (it is DS right?) shared my hymnal, I think he ever so slightly let his hand touch mine…I needed the katana at that moment.

      • 132 Professor VJ Duke September 7, 2015 at 15:35

*laughs* Yes, it’s DS. Was he flirting with you? Or attacking you?

  13. 133 Debbie August 21, 2015 at 15:00

I’ve always loved that song, Professor, and your rendition certainly does it justice — well played! And it’s about time, too, that you treat your readers to another video! What I can’t understand is why you didn’t draw a crowd. Anybody playing that professionally would, you know (unless, of course, the store was closed for your recording!)

As for the guinea pig, you’ve got to admit the little guy is cute! The fur and whiskers alone are fetching, and I bet Dallas would love to herd it into a corner!

Sorry, Mr. R. You can’t hold a candle to the Professor!!

    • 134 Professor VJ Duke August 21, 2015 at 17:06

Thanks bunches, Debbie! That’s great. Makes me feel Southern, you know. Well, there was actually another chap playing electric in another room! And it was very slow that day, for the store. That’s one of the reasons we were able to get in.

Now, would Dallas get along with him?

But I do think he’s mad at me, dadblameit.

  14. 135 desertdweller29 August 21, 2015 at 13:48

Excellent idea, Susan P! I’ve waited long enough for another guitar solo. And Sweet Home Alabama is perfect!! Now I don’t even remember that boring, awful lecture.

    • 136 Professor VJ Duke August 21, 2015 at 17:04

So, DD…was it worth the wait? Be honest. Rip away!

      • 137 desertdweller29 August 21, 2015 at 18:43

Absolutely! No rip here, Professor! All you need really is the Kenny G hair. I don’t think he would have gotten anywhere without it. You unleash some wild hair-do and Kenny will be playing for you. I promise!

      • 138 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:22

Really? I so want to play with Kenny. Would just a wig work, do you suppose?

    • 139 Susan P August 22, 2015 at 12:37

Thank you, but I had nothing to do with Alabama. I just like to stir PVJ’s imagination to see what he will come up with. And this is an outstanding example.

      • 140 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:30

        You stirred the pot!

      • 141 Susan P August 22, 2015 at 18:08

        Busted.

  15. 142 PorterGirl August 21, 2015 at 13:43

Well, I personally was quite enjoying the lecture but the video is far better! You know how much I adore Sweet Home so I shall not get too mushy about here. Great work, P.VJ! Absolutely super work, in fact!

    • 143 Professor VJ Duke August 21, 2015 at 17:04

The lecture was a real bore, though. He was going on and on and on…

Thanks bunches! I know you do like it. And it’s a fun one to play solo. Makes me feel like a southern chap.

      • 144 PorterGirl August 22, 2015 at 07:32

At least I learned a lot about guinea pigs. I have been listening to it lots! A Southern chap in tight jeans *laughs*

      • 145 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:28

It is most interesting and new what he had to say about the g pigs, I must admit. Really? Cool. Like it better or worse with each listen? For me, it’s worse. Haha, yes. One can hardly fit anything in those dadblame pockets!

      • 146 PorterGirl August 23, 2015 at 14:54

I feel very educated in fact. I like it better every time! There must be a problem with your ears, I am thinking. Maybe the pockets are just for show.

      • 147 Professor VJ Duke August 24, 2015 at 19:51

My ears are definitely bad. I should return them. For show? They should’ve said. Now I’m pocketless.

      • 148 PorterGirl August 25, 2015 at 06:05

The ears look nice though, so maybe keep one for decorative purposes. Those dadblame pockets are just too cheeky for their own good, I say.

      • 149 Professor VJ Duke August 25, 2015 at 13:26

I’ll hang the one I keep on the wall or something. They are! Maybe the jeans have learned from the pants!

      • 150 PorterGirl August 25, 2015 at 13:39

Yes, in a frame. Oh no say it isn’t so! They look too nice to become part of Terry’s nest! Keep an eye on them, P.VJ.

      • 151 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 12:08

Okay, I shall wear them for a bits and little bits, the buggers. A frame…goodness.

      • 152 PorterGirl August 26, 2015 at 12:32

That’s the spirit, they will soon come round to your way of thinking. The buggers.

      • 153 Professor VJ Duke August 26, 2015 at 20:49

        I’m thinking you’re right.

      • 154 PorterGirl August 27, 2015 at 06:17

Ah, I am thinking I am always right. Even when I’m not.

      • 155 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 12:37

Now that is something. I’m jealous of it, too, the sudden.

      • 156 PorterGirl August 27, 2015 at 12:41

But you always win, so that sort of balances out.

      • 157 Professor VJ Duke August 27, 2015 at 12:42

I win usually, but then I lose too. Depends see.

    • 158 Susan P August 22, 2015 at 12:42

But PG, sooner or later that guinea pig is going to squeal like a room full of middle school girls at a rock concert. Especially if you rattle that guinea pig’s food container.

      • 159 Professor VJ Duke August 22, 2015 at 17:30

I did that all the time.

      • 160 Susan P August 22, 2015 at 18:08

        Poor wee creature. :D

      • 161 PorterGirl August 23, 2015 at 14:45

Very true. But their little squeaks are just so adorable!

      • 162 Susan P August 23, 2015 at 15:12

        All night long.

      • 163 PorterGirl August 23, 2015 at 15:42

Hmm. You are right. It could become less adorable quite rapidly.
