At the Ball — Like a Zebra

So, I was on the way to the ball.

With Schwarz Tauptinker.

But it was hard. Getting ready to go, that is.

Schwarz came out of the shower…sorta clothe-less. And we had a time times a half a time searching for his stuff. Apparently, they’d taken it for washing.

They do that sort of thing. I yelled and hollered then hollered and yelled.

We found him something to wear.

Literally with ten seconds to spare.

The professor put on a black shirt, white tie, and white coat. Just to mess with the eyes. That sort of outfit does, see.

Just like zebras mess with the eyes.

Unknown

Even though they’re bigger towards the end, nice colors, I say.

Now we were on the way. To the ball.

Here’s the thing: the ball’s house–or the house the ball was in–wasn’t too far. It was down a street, across another, alongside a bridge, then upside the hill.

Smackdabness in the middle.

We arrived shortly after 1700. That’s around when it started.

Of course we arrived in the black of a back thing. Wait. Strike and reverse that: We arrived in the back of a black thing. Yes, that’s the ticket.

Then we went in.

“Sir,” one fluffy dressed chap said in the hall, “I’ll take your coat.”

But since I don’t give up my coats, and Schwarz didn’t have a coat, I said:

“You shan’t. There’s nothing you can do for us, don’t you know.”

Then we were in the ballroom. There were several big rooms, in fact. All connected though doorways, like most big rooms.

And now here’s the thing: there were big TVs on the walls, playing music.

How odd and wonderful.

Schwarz and I separated, going our separate ways. We separated, see. Going separate ways.

Any-separate-ways and a few…

It looked something like this, only not so yellow.

The place was packed up to the ceiling. I ran into Ruber Salami first.

“Oi!” he said. “What are you about, PVJ?”

“Ruber!” I said, pretending to be pleased. “What a surprise.”

And it was. Not seeing him, of course. What he was wearing. That was the surprise.

Ruber was dressed in a blue suit. His red stringy hair was pulled back. It was quite a sight to behold. (And it was a ponytail. Mental note for later.)

That’s why I didn’t behold it too longly long.

So I looked past him when I spoke to him.

“What’s with that hair thing on your belt?” he asked.

I looked up and to the left, not meeting his eyes.

“Oh that,” I began. “Why that is–”

“Why aren’t you looking at me?!” Ruber asked. “I’ll knock your teeth in!”

“Oh…dadblameit. Here’s the thing: that hair is–”

“Belongs to me.” It was another voice.

And it was Julia Thompson. She had shorter hair now, but it was her.

My imagination is running wild with no relief in sight, it’s really quiet wicked of you. I need to know what is going on with the naked Schwarz, why he showers in your shower, what’s happening at the ball and your obsession with ponytails hanging from your belt. You are doing this on purpose as though I am not already a couch case. Have a lovely Friday Professor.

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:42

*laughing* Well, one is usually naked in the shower. So that’s why Schwarz was naked. A good reason, you must admit, the sudden. Also…taking ponytails is fun…you know it is!

      • 3 Heartafire October 2, 2015 at 13:46

I’m a closet ponytail collector, my belts are full of them. Strange…

      • 4 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 20:20

Wow! Do you have black ones?

      • 5 Heartafire October 2, 2015 at 21:14

No black ones, that’s on my bucket list though! so excited!

      • 6 Professor VJ Duke October 3, 2015 at 18:20

You must take me with you, at once!

      • 7 Heartafire October 3, 2015 at 19:44

        wicked!

      • 8 Professor VJ Duke October 4, 2015 at 22:20

        No u!

      • 9 Heartafire October 4, 2015 at 22:58

        U ,sir

      • 10 Professor VJ Duke October 5, 2015 at 21:10

        I’m wicked, yes.

      • 11 Heartafire October 6, 2015 at 11:49

        Good, it’s settled

      • 12 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:33

        Settled and done.

      • 13 Heartafire October 6, 2015 at 18:34

maybe I’m not ready for it to be done…:-)

      • 14 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:45

        And why not, madam?

      • 15 Heartafire October 6, 2015 at 18:47

        because I am wicked.

      • 16 Professor VJ Duke October 7, 2015 at 11:55

        I’m more wicked!

      • 17 Heartafire October 7, 2015 at 13:03

You should have been there when I…you are one wicked professor!

      • 18 Professor VJ Duke October 8, 2015 at 20:58

        When you????

      • 19 Heartafire October 8, 2015 at 22:21

        I wasn’t expecting the inquisition …plus I got nothing ,

      • 20 Professor VJ Duke October 9, 2015 at 13:08

        *laughs* Hmm…

      • 21 Heartafire October 9, 2015 at 13:58

you got nothing too , huh? Laughs! That’s ok. I think you need to get out your guitar and play us a little Love is Blue. I can play Greensleeves on the piano and stairway to heaven on guitar, that’s the only songs I can play. Money well spent on those lessons!

      • 22 Professor VJ Duke October 11, 2015 at 17:29

Well, that’s a start for sure! Let’s play together the sudden.

      • 23 Heartafire October 11, 2015 at 21:08

if you hadn’t gotten yourself into trouble we could go on the road, get a few gigs.

      • 24 Professor VJ Duke October 12, 2015 at 19:58

        Can’t we do that now?

      • 25 Heartafire October 12, 2015 at 23:28

My manager will contact your manager. You can play Greensleves and Stairway right. It will be a short session and I hope you are over your hair obsession ,

      • 26 Professor VJ Duke October 13, 2015 at 19:49

I’m obsessed with guitars not hair, mind you. But, I shall try and play greenseleves. Good song.

      • 27 Heartafire October 13, 2015 at 19:53

I would swoon if you played greensleeves! swoon as in faint.

      • 28 Professor VJ Duke October 13, 2015 at 20:04

        Now why is this, Hollie?

      • 29 Heartafire October 13, 2015 at 21:54

I love Greensleeves and want to hear you play it on the guitar.

      • 30 Professor VJ Duke October 14, 2015 at 12:40

Greensleeves is awesome. That sounds like a challenge, Hollie! I like it lots.

      • 31 Heartafire October 14, 2015 at 14:11

        I have thr

      • 32 Heartafire October 14, 2015 at 14:12

I have thrown down the gauntlet. Need some Greenskeeves

      • 33 Professor VJ Duke October 14, 2015 at 19:40

        Solo guitar?

      • 34 Heartafire October 14, 2015 at 19:46

Yeah. It would be lovely. No pressure of course.

  2. 35 L. Marie October 2, 2015 at 12:59

Obviously you didn’t bring your katana with you. It would have looked nice with your attire. I say obviously, because you could have sliced off Ruber’s ponytail in a trice. But perhaps I’m mistaken and you’ll show your weapon soon now that Julia’s around.

    • 36 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:39

I think a fight is pending indeed. I might need to draw the katana! I’m excited about this, I must admit.

  3. 37 erinkenobi2893 October 2, 2015 at 02:31

I would wear a suit like that. Better still, I’d wear a green suit with a black shirt and white canvas-sided shoes.
Oh! Do we look forward to the cutting of Ruber’s ponytail in future? I can help distract him, if you’d like. By pretending to be a time traveler. Which, I am. So that sentence was somewhat paradoxical. I am an expert on paradoxes. ;-P

    • 38 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:32

*laughs* Love your uniform! Yes, definitely distract the bugger, and I’ll take his tail. Brilliant you are!

      • 39 erinkenobi2893 October 2, 2015 at 13:57

*rubs hands together* Right! Let’s get started!

      • 40 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 20:23

        Quite right! Where to begin?

      • 41 erinkenobi2893 October 2, 2015 at 20:32

*puts on dramatic coat* There, I’m all ready now.
*walks up to Ruber* Which way to 1927, my good man?

      • 42 Professor VJ Duke October 3, 2015 at 18:17

        He might spit at you!

      • 43 erinkenobi2893 October 3, 2015 at 18:45

If he does, I’ll just flick popcorn at him. *grins at Ruber* Come on! You invented that Wayback Machine. I just got a little lost and need to take a bearing.

      • 44 Professor VJ Duke October 4, 2015 at 22:19

Flick it into his mouth! He might choke, then, see.

      • 45 erinkenobi2893 October 4, 2015 at 23:54

I also have jelly beans, which is a confisculation, since I don’t really eat them. Would you like one, Ruber?
        (How’s the sneaking coming, Professor?)

      • 46 Professor VJ Duke October 5, 2015 at 21:12

        I’ve been stopped by a chap…help!

Ruber: “Sure. I love jelly beans, oi.”

      • 47 erinkenobi2893 October 6, 2015 at 03:06

        *hands Ruber a jelly bean*
You know what else they’re good for? *inconspicuously knocks out the guy who’s stopped the professor by launching one at high speed*

      • 48 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:30

Both Ruber and this professor are quite shocked! Wow. You must teach me.

      • 49 erinkenobi2893 October 6, 2015 at 19:59

Beaned him with a jelly bean. ^_^
I will teach you if you like. ;-)

      • 50 Professor VJ Duke October 7, 2015 at 12:00

I love how you turn anything into a weapon, don’t you know.

      • 51 erinkenobi2893 October 7, 2015 at 12:58

        I am very inventive! :-P

  4. 52 John W. Howell September 30, 2015 at 22:04

Oops. Used to belong that is to say.

    • 53 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:40

*laughs* What shall I do now? Rats.

      • 54 John W. Howell October 1, 2015 at 13:00

Tell her possession is nine tenths of the law.

      • 55 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:15

*laughs* And when you have a katana…it’s 10 out of 10.

      • 56 John W. Howell October 2, 2015 at 17:24

        There you go.

      • 57 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 20:35

        Now I feel proud.

      • 58 John W. Howell October 3, 2015 at 00:40

        Another medal opportunity.

      • 59 Professor VJ Duke October 3, 2015 at 18:26

Gold too by the feel of things.

      • 60 John W. Howell October 3, 2015 at 20:27

        *bites coin* Yup gold

      • 61 Professor VJ Duke October 4, 2015 at 22:23

Let’s sell it and buy a sub.

      • 62 John W. Howell October 4, 2015 at 23:07

It is only a pound of gold. less than $30,ooo. Subs run more than that.

      • 63 Professor VJ Duke October 5, 2015 at 21:11

Rats! Can’t you find a used sub?

      • 64 John W. Howell October 6, 2015 at 00:48

There is one for sale. Slightly used but has a tub stopper that keeps coming out and letting the water in.

      • 65 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:28

How useless. We’ll buy it…but we must get super glue, too.

      • 66 John W. Howell October 6, 2015 at 18:34

        Or just a new stopper.

      • 67 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:45

But I’ll feel safer with the glue…

      • 68 John W. Howell October 6, 2015 at 18:58

        Glue it is.

      • 69 Professor VJ Duke October 7, 2015 at 11:56

        Super glue, though.

      • 70 John W. Howell October 7, 2015 at 16:26

        Watch your fingers.

      • 71 Professor VJ Duke October 8, 2015 at 21:06

I’ve actually glued my fingers together at one point. Wow.

      • 72 John W. Howell October 8, 2015 at 21:29

Me too. Do you know how hard it is to signal for a table for two with three fingers glued together?

      • 73 Professor VJ Duke October 9, 2015 at 13:06

*laughs* Haha! That would be hard. I could imagine the hostess’s face. Goodness. Now I want to give it a go.

      • 74 John W. Howell October 9, 2015 at 16:29

Also ordering one beer might be an issue.

      • 75 Professor VJ Duke October 11, 2015 at 17:38

*laughs* You could always have one or two for home in that case.

      • 76 John W. Howell October 11, 2015 at 20:17

        True.

  5. 77 desertdweller29 September 30, 2015 at 20:31

How many tails will you collect until your belt is complete? Ruber’s will be a festive addition, I say. Add come color to all that black and white garb.

    • 78 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:39

*laughs* One must do something to get colorful. One of each color! How’s that?

      • 79 desertdweller29 October 1, 2015 at 18:48

        Excellent! Commence cutting!

      • 80 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:24

*sets about it* I’ll tell the police you said it was okay.

  6. 81 FictionFan September 30, 2015 at 16:41

Clothe-less?!! Good noodles! Think of my blood pressure, Professor!! And yes, yes – very interesting to know what you wore and what Ruber wore, but you missed the most exciting bit – what did Schwarzy wear? I bet he looked adorable whatever it was…

Sounds like you’re in big trouble now… *smiles cheerfully and whistles*

    • 82 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 18:00

Did you know that if you drink lots of water your blood pressure goes up? Tell that to someone who says high blood pressure is bad. *jots it down in his book* We had to find something for Schwarz last minute, can you believe! He’s wearing black pants and a guitar shirt. Definitely adorable!

Hey! You’re not supposed to like that!

      • 83 FictionFan October 1, 2015 at 00:57

Really? Then I shall only drink champagne in future! Now, what is a guitar shirt? Long neck and a big hole in the middle? Bet Schwarzy can carry it off though…

Why not? It’s time you got your comeuppance, sir!

      • 84 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:41

That’s what you think a guitar is like? *professor eye* I’m not sure what a guitar shirt is. Maybe just a picture of a guitar on a shirt? Or the word “Fender”. Something like that.

*stands behind FEF* Go get her!

      • 85 FictionFan October 1, 2015 at 16:09

No, no! I meant elegant and beautifully curved and… and… adorable! Schwarzy wouldn’t have worn that to a ball! I bet he was a picture of sartorial refinement! And I bet he doesn’t have a ponytail…

You mean… I get to use my peashooter? At the bobber?!!! *jumps up and down in girlish glee*

      • 86 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:22

A guitar does have beautiful curves. I kiss them all the time. Schwarz looked good. That’s ’cause I helped him out, though.

You sure can! Take aim, I say!

      • 87 FictionFan October 2, 2015 at 16:43

*laughs* Sooo sweet! Has she got a name yet? My Schwarzy doesn’t need your help, sir! He would look gorgeous in anything – even dinky little baseball trousers!

        Takes a deep breath…

      • 88 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 20:32

*laughing* Guitars are the only things I fall in love with, you must understand. Schwarz would look awesome in a baseball outfit! I think he’d be a pitcher.

Exhale right before you fire. Breathing jerks the body, see.

      • 89 FictionFan October 3, 2015 at 00:31

Poor clarinet! *sniffles* You’re so cruel! A jug?? That’s not very nice!! *stamps on the Professor’s foot*

*laughs lots* I’m not sure that advice really applies to peashooters. If I exhale before I fire then the peas will merely dribble out the end… Kenny could probably do it though!

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke October 3, 2015 at 18:26

Oh dear. I do love the clarinet, too. *laughing* Ow! Bet you broke my toe!

I thought you were going to use a revolver! Rats.

      • 91 FictionFan October 3, 2015 at 22:50

I should hope you do! We can but hope…

*gasps* Good noodles, no! That would be too quick and not nearly humiliating enough – no, mushy peas are much more effective in such situations.

      • 92 Professor VJ Duke October 4, 2015 at 22:27

But hope? *rages and ambushes FEF*

*laughs* You’re just scared of it!

      • 93 FictionFan October 5, 2015 at 15:35

*laughs* So brave to ambush when you have a broken toe…

Am not!!! I just think guns are cowardly weapons… *flees in anticipation of the Professorial wrath*

      • 94 Professor VJ Duke October 5, 2015 at 21:20

I’ve wrapped it up in fleece.

I’ve heard that before, you know. It’s okay–I’ll just laugh you to scorn. Women don’t understand these things. *laughs and laughs*

      • 95 FictionFan October 6, 2015 at 15:08

Ah – you’ll need to wear sandals then!

Because it’s true! It’s also cheating! But men aren’t highly evolved enough to understand… *laughs pityingly*

      • 96 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:38

        Or boots!

*laughing* Nice insult, FEF, I must say! *fist thingy* We can start glock practice whenever you want. Can’t have you scared of such things.

      • 97 FictionFan October 6, 2015 at 22:55

You’d need to cut the front off and then they’d be boondals!

Thank you – I liked it too! *laughs* But what if it turns out I’m a great shot? Then I might get recruited by the Pentagon to defend America from alien invasion… (though you’d think an intelligent life-form would be more likely to visit Scotland…)

      • 98 Professor VJ Duke October 7, 2015 at 12:03

        *laughs* Whatever is a boondal?

*laughs* But who says Alien’s are intelligent life-forms? Imagine if they’re all like that dumb prince chap from Enchanted. You might be a really good shot. Definitely worth trying…

      • 99 FictionFan October 7, 2015 at 16:58

        Half boot, half sandal!

Well, you know, I was thinking… in comparison to Americans! Hmm… pretty, romantic, rich, charming and like to dance? I wonder where their planet is? *prepares for lift-off* Well, OK, but only if you balance an apple on your head…

      • 100 Professor VJ Duke October 8, 2015 at 21:11

        Never!!

*laughs* I was just shredded by my Scottish friend! I bet they live on Hoth. It’d be super cold there. Lots of snow. Many snowmen. Bad ones. *laughs* I don’t trust you that much yet.

      • 101 FictionFan October 9, 2015 at 01:21

        *laughs*

I like snow! And snowmen can be cute! Not cuddly though… not without gloves anyway! *laughs* Very wise! Make it a pumpkin!

      • 102 Professor VJ Duke October 9, 2015 at 13:12

But imagine how cold it would be in the house! That’s one point against the idea.

      • 103 FictionFan October 10, 2015 at 00:30

But you would go out and chop wood to build me a big fire, surely? So I’d be fine…

      • 104 Professor VJ Duke October 11, 2015 at 17:45

*laughs* But wouldn’t you want to chop the wood?

      • 105 FictionFan October 11, 2015 at 23:04

In the cold?! That’s man’s work!

      • 106 Professor VJ Duke October 12, 2015 at 20:02

But…but…but…the feminists won’t like it, FEF.

  7. 107 Simply Skeptical September 30, 2015 at 16:26

Professor is it very wise to walk around with the tail in your belt advertising evidence? I think I may consider running cause if Ruber puts two and two together (he is slow I know) BUT…. hair pulled back in all yikes run!!!!

    • 108 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 17:59

      *laughs* I’m a regular serial-ponytail-killer!

  8. 109 walt walker September 30, 2015 at 15:39

I actually said that bit about moving to my wife, but not seriously. We both know moving again is not an option. We’ll have to co-habitate with our guest. Or maybe we are the guests. Not sure about that one.

    • 110 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 17:58

Goodness me. More than one? Okay, then, you should have me come over and together we can find out how many there are. Still, I’m rather sure the boomerang will make quick work of them. Also, ghosts hate when you invite them to tea and aren’t spooked by them.

Now how did this comment get on your blog, I wonder. It was supposed to go on mine. As you can see, it makes no sense in the context of things over here. And yet over here it is. It’s a wonder. Hope it’s not too egregious an affront to decorum, and what not. Yours in befuddlement ~ Walt.

      • 112 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:40

*laughing lots* It was so interesting, when it came. It could be the ghost, Walt. But still, it was something of quite a lot of fun to be put here, don’t you know.

This smells like revenge and it’s being served brilliantly cold. I am shocked that Ruber is somehow involved but then again his father is Daddy Salami.

I must admit it’s kinda gross to be wearing Julia’s hair and I am sure it is more than a statement piece. Maybe this is a warning to you.

Perhaps Schwarz was sent to your house to trap you….hmmmmm…..

    • 114 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 17:56

Oh dear. Do you suppose Ruber and Schwarz are in on it? Nah!

I’m probably going to slap her with it. After all, she does deserve it.

Oh dear you do think that he is! Well, I shall shave him bald!

      • 115 Lady Dunamis September 30, 2015 at 18:21

Anything can happen in the PL. We all know what happens in the PL stays in the PL.

      • 116 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:35

Even though I try to bring it out.

  10. 117 walt walker September 30, 2015 at 14:12

You should cut his off and brandish them both as weapons. You would be invincible.

    • 118 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 17:55

Imagine! I bet even Dick and Bruce Lee would run.

  11. 119 Susan P September 30, 2015 at 13:19

I don’t see how this can possibly end well. You would do well to watch out for bad ju-ju. I smell it out there.

    • 120 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 17:54

Don’t you think I’ll end up winning? All that needs done is this: take Ruber’s ponytail and give it to Julia; give Julia’s to Ruber: I win.

      • 121 Susan P September 30, 2015 at 17:58

        Day dreaming again?

      • 122 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 18:02

Awww rats. You don’t think it’ll work?

      • 123 Susan P September 30, 2015 at 18:12

        It will work…but…

      • 124 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:35

        But…?

      • 125 Susan P October 1, 2015 at 13:24

You have to make an appointment and they are all booked up. Did you not know that?

      • 126 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:18

I fear I didn’t. Take care of it for me, please.

      • 127 Susan P October 4, 2015 at 20:04

Sorry. I am all booked up.

      • 128 Professor VJ Duke October 4, 2015 at 22:30

        Oh rats and a heifer.

      • 129 Susan P October 5, 2015 at 00:54

Oh stats and a mind reader.

      • 130 Professor VJ Duke October 5, 2015 at 21:14

        Mind reader? Wow…

      • 131 Susan P October 5, 2015 at 22:40

Ruber says he can read your mind.

      • 132 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:26

Does he really? The bugger. Beat him for me, please.

      • 133 Susan P October 6, 2015 at 19:24

He said you would say that.

      • 134 Professor VJ Duke October 7, 2015 at 11:57

Now I’m scared. I will run!

      • 135 Susan P October 7, 2015 at 13:26

        Fast.

      • 136 Susan P September 30, 2015 at 18:14

        What do you think?

      • 137 Professor VJ Duke October 1, 2015 at 12:35

I think it just might work splendidly.

      • 138 Susan P October 1, 2015 at 13:25

        Unless Tree-beard shows up.

      • 139 Professor VJ Duke October 2, 2015 at 13:18

        He’s so slow.

      • 140 Susan P October 4, 2015 at 20:05

Not that slow. No sir. And he is very strong.

      • 141 Professor VJ Duke October 4, 2015 at 22:30

        But fire would fetch him.

      • 142 Susan P October 5, 2015 at 00:55

You would destroy a land mark?

      • 143 Professor VJ Duke October 5, 2015 at 21:14

        Absolutely! I”m shameless.

      • 144 Susan P October 5, 2015 at 22:41

There. I just made one. Now what?

      • 145 Professor VJ Duke October 6, 2015 at 18:26

        Well I won’t destroy yours!

      • 146 Susan P October 6, 2015 at 19:25

How can you tell them apart?

      • 147 Professor VJ Duke October 7, 2015 at 11:58

        Yours is better looking.

      • 148 Susan P October 7, 2015 at 13:31

Mine has a twinkle in the right top edge.

  12. 149 PorterGirl September 30, 2015 at 13:11

Schwarz has been nude for two posts now, this blog is becoming very risque indeed! I wish I lived in a place that had as many balls as TPL, it really is quite a wonder. I fear for Ruber’s ponytail. And I rather think Julia might want hers back, the minx. What high drama, Professor!

    • 150 Professor VJ Duke September 30, 2015 at 17:53

      *laughing* But…but…but…no, he’s only been…well…you’re wicked!

Aren’t the balls something? It’s such a thingy. Must be a craze. Do you suppose I should take Ruber’s and give it to her?
