Music the Professor Listens To [Ft. Prof & Umbrellas]

professor speaksOkay.

So, I thought I’d tell a bit about what I listen to–when I drive about or am cleaning the house.

(Yes, this professor needs music mostly all the time. Without music, I’m not in the right mood. And, yes, I do clean the house. To stop the beetle invasion, see.)

Now, now.

It might be surprising, but…

…I listen almost exclusively to movie soundtracks!

Of course, I do listen to rock, classical and all that jazz. But still. If I want to do some listening, it’s movie soundtracks.

Right. Yo.

So, my favorite three right now (it changes from time to time, see) are:

(#3) Jurassic World

Michael Giacchino did a SUPER awesome job complimenting John Williams‘ original themes. Seriously, if you haven’t listened to this soundtrack, you’re missing out, and I’m sure a dino will eat you any minute now.

(#2) The Last Samurai

I’ve actually been listening to this one a lot on the computer. This is what the professor is usually working to. Now you know. Epically masterful job by Mr. Hans Zimmer. I think I’m a samurai, the sudden.

(#1) John Carter

So, I think Giacchino is my favorite movie composer right night. This music is the absolute tops!! Plus, it’s my favorite movie. You know, I think I am John Carter. Forget what I said about being a samurai.

Also, I was given an umbrellas this week…

Hat and umbrella? What hat and umbrella?

    • 2 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 20:52

      What mean thee?

      • 3 Jackie June 22, 2016 at 21:38

Watching the video I got the distinct impression that you would like to forget the subject of hats and umbrellas and move on to something else. Maybe I misunderstood?

      • 4 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 14:36

No, no, the sudden, you’re completely right. That’s how I work, usually. I just move on fastly fast, you know.

      • 5 Jackie June 24, 2016 at 15:18

        I completely understand!

      • 6 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 17:27

        Well, capital then!

  2. 7 erinkenobi2893 June 20, 2016 at 02:01

I listen to the “Thor: The Dark World” soundtrack. It’s fantastic. Also, are you being invaded by beetles?!
(I need a long umbrella which doesn’t collapse down. For scheming purposes. Not to use. Just so I look… sinister!)

    • 8 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 13:22

I love that one!! It’s epic. Well, not really. But still, they might invade. You never know, you know.

That’d be cool! Get me one, too, when you get one

      • 9 erinkenobi2893 June 21, 2016 at 17:59

        It is!
Beetles are such sneaky braggarts. You can never be too careful.
Never to use. Simply to look sinister ;-)

      • 10 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 21:01

They really are. WE should eat them all!

      • 11 erinkenobi2893 June 24, 2016 at 15:58

        I don’t know. I might be allergic.

      • 12 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 17:29

        Allergies stink.

      • 13 erinkenobi2893 June 27, 2016 at 18:15

        They do. And they hurt.

  3. 14 L. Marie June 16, 2016 at 12:58

Nice to see you, Professor! You call that a messy office. I can show you messy!
I think you’re right. I’ve never seen either of my brothers with an umbrella. Nor my dad. Nor my uncles. ex-boyfriends, yes. But they were toads and don’t count.

    • 15 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:42

Haha. I must see yours now! IT’s so filthy messy right now. Must clean.

See? Aha! Does that mean my theory is right? *dances* Toads! Hahaha

  4. 16 Lady Dunamis June 16, 2016 at 11:36

    Ode to your umbrella

    • 17 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:41

Oh that was awful! Who writes that stuff! *dies* No umbrellas!

      • 18 Lady Dunamis June 16, 2016 at 14:59

Haha! See, even Rhianna understands the importance of the umbrella…😆

      • 19 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:34

        But that’s ’cause she’s a girl. See. I win. #win

  5. 20 John W. Howell June 15, 2016 at 23:20

    All good ones.

    • 21 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:41

What do you listen to when you write?

      • 22 John W. Howell June 16, 2016 at 21:55

I have a bunch of collections of music on iHeart Radio. I hit a selection and it plays a certain genre. For example Roy Orbison radio will play he and his contemporaries. (about an hour’s worth)

      • 23 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:53

cool! I’ve heard iHeart is nice. I should get something like that. As it is now, I just shift around youtube.

      • 24 John W. Howell June 17, 2016 at 19:08

Just go to your app store on the phone. It’s free.

      • 25 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 13:03

        The app store scares me

      • 26 John W. Howell June 21, 2016 at 15:34

        Do not be afraid

      • 27 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 20:53

But aren’t you supposed to fear to be courageous?

      • 28 John W. Howell June 22, 2016 at 23:00

        Or courage to fear.

      • 29 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 14:44

        Ooo…I like that!

      • 30 John W. Howell June 24, 2016 at 19:45

        Yes. Me too.

      • 31 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 17:31

        *sighs*

      • 32 John W. Howell June 26, 2016 at 18:40

        Yes indeed.

  6. 33 Susan P June 15, 2016 at 21:38

My dad used to use umbrellas.

    • 34 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:40

      No he didn’t!

      • 35 Susan P June 17, 2016 at 21:34

Oh but he did. He also had a couple of switches.

      • 36 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 13:15

        switch blades?

      • 37 Susan P June 21, 2016 at 17:55

        Needles.

      • 38 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 21:00

        From pine trees!

      • 39 Susan P June 23, 2016 at 12:39

        And pins….

  7. 40 Simply Skeptical June 15, 2016 at 20:39

Hmmm. I see, so if the Professor is enthralled with it, if he likes it, he is it. Is that correct? Well I think you have some excellent tastes since these are awesome movie themes. :-)

    • 41 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:40

Yes, that’s it exactly! Well summed up, I say

      • 42 Simply Skeptical June 16, 2016 at 22:21

Have you grown into your music tastes like a fine glass of wine or particularly cultivated green leaf?

      • 43 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:54

Whoa. Deep question there. Probably a mixture of both, since that sounds cool to me.

  8. 44 walt walker June 15, 2016 at 20:26

If you don’t want the umbrella, you could call it a parachute and use it like one.

    • 45 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:40

Walt, I just got done saying there was a hole in it! You want me to die, don’t you?

      • 46 walt walker June 17, 2016 at 00:05

No I don’t want you to die, that would be rude. You plug the hole first, with a hole plug, or hole sealant, or some such.

      • 47 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:54

        How about gorilla glue?

  9. 48 Freakishly Fangirlish June 15, 2016 at 19:14

John carter was quite a freaky movie. But I liked it! Mad Max: Fury Road was a lot better, though.

    • 49 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:32

That’s gotta be my favorite movie! Why freaky? *professorish eye* I didn’t catch that one! But it looked pretty spicy

      • 50 Freakishly Fangirlish June 16, 2016 at 17:26

Oooh you should watch Mad max. it was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, and Im not even super into sci-fi and all that jazz.

      • 51 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:40

All that jazz! Haha. Love that saying. Right. I’ll have to catch it. That and The Boy, since you recommended it.

      • 52 Freakishly Fangirlish June 17, 2016 at 22:59

Noo i said DONT watch The Boy!! XD

      • 53 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 13:18

        But…I thought? You sure?

      • 54 Freakishly Fangirlish June 21, 2016 at 18:10

        Positive! XD

      • 55 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 21:02

        Super, super?

  10. 56 Heartafire June 15, 2016 at 18:34

This is a delightful post love the glimpse into the musical and rainy day world of the Professor. I went through a phase obsessing with the 2001 A Space Oddessy track, keep that hush hush. John Williams is at the top of my fine composer list. I am a fan of umbrellas but only on rainy days. Thank you for sharing these tracks with us. I plan to listen to them as I work. :-)

    • 57 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:31

Make sure to listen to JC!!!

It’s a glimpse into my insanity, isn’t it? Well, I am insane, you know. A space oddesy! That’s good music! Nothing to be ashamed about, see. Listen to it again, for me, pleas.e

      • 58 Heartafire June 16, 2016 at 21:33

Oh, I definitely will. I love 2001, It really does have an amazing sound track hats off to composer Alex North. I gave this sound track as a gift to a friend, I guess taste in music is very subjective. :)

      • 59 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:52

I just listened to it again! I love it, too. It’s pretty cool. Music is awesome, you know

      • 60 Heartafire June 17, 2016 at 14:54

I love music, I can’t imagine a world without music. How sad that would be!

      • 61 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 12:56

        It’d be awful!

      • 62 Heartafire June 21, 2016 at 15:38

unthinkable… Music is a gift from the gods.

      • 63 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 20:54

Can I be a demi god?

      • 64 Heartafire June 22, 2016 at 21:12

        Of course, feel free!

      • 65 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 14:32

        *professor eye*

      • 66 Heartafire June 24, 2016 at 14:35

eyes back, nods and winks too.

      • 67 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 15:08

Don’t you eye the professor! Dadblameit

      • 68 Heartafire June 24, 2016 at 15:10

        eyes, wide and haunting.

      • 69 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 17:27

        I’m scared now.

      • 70 Heartafire June 27, 2016 at 01:10

        :)

  11. 71 Debbie June 15, 2016 at 17:49

Love your choices in music, Professor (and I, too, work MUCH better and happier with music in the background!). I think Domer would agree with you…he doesn’t believe in umbrellas either. Perhaps that’s because you guys aren’t “sweet,” unlike most of us ladies, who are made with sugar and would surely melt in a heavy rain!!

    • 72 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:30

Awesome! Tis the best music. (It’s just a fact! Does something for the mood.) Haha. I think Domer and I would be best friends. Melt? I never thought of it that way. Hahahahaha.

  12. 73 FictionFan June 15, 2016 at 17:47

I do declare that was definitely, absolutely, positively and for certain a little kiss-curl trying to escape from your… er… hat thing!! And you can’t deny it! *jumps for joy*

Now, as to the question at hand, I googled Tom Brady Umbrella – and not a single image of him with one of the things! I then googled Brock Lesnar (though whether he qualifies as human I’m not sure) and nope! No umbrella images! I then googled Donald Trump Umbrella – and guess what? Zillions of images!!! (Admittedly, he has special hair-related issues the other two have been spared…) So……

….. I think your theory has been proved to be correct!!! Well done, sir!! I always knew that one day you’d be correct about… something!! *tribune salute thingy* #proud

Just off to check out that kiss-curl again now…

    • 74 L. Marie June 16, 2016 at 12:57

      Ha ha ha ha!!!!

      • 75 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:42

        Don’t encourage her!

      • 76 FictionFan June 16, 2016 at 19:00

        *sticks tongue out at Professor*

      • 77 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:41

        Hahahaha

    • 78 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:29

*laughs* I didn’t even think on that… Was not neither! It was…just…a…I need a haircut. That was a Pats hat, I’ll have you know. Just not a hat thingy!

*laughing lots* Of course Brady wouldn’t cary one! Or the Beast Incarnate. Trump now…I’m sure he would. *shakes head* But you’ve yet to find a professor hero that does. Hector wouldn’t! Julian wouldn’t! John Carter wouldn’t! Heck, he’d probably walk naked through the rain, now that I think on it.

The tribune salute!!!!!!!!!!! *impressed* See, I am right, mostly all the time. Especially my theories. What can I say? Lots of study goes into such things.

      It wasn’t neither!

      • 79 FictionFan June 16, 2016 at 19:08

Oh, too late – the proof is there for all to see!! *victory dance* Well I might have known it was a Pats hat if it had been on the right way round! Of course, I’m assuming it wasn’t your head that was back-to-front… *muses*

John Carter walking naked through the rain… *pauses for a (long) moment of reflection* I wonder if Darby uses an umbrella… *pauses again*

Mostly? Do you think so? I’d reckon about the same proportion as Shnoddy… #ohdear

        *chuckles* Was!

      • 80 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:44

Hm. It was just ’cause I was wearing the hat, mind. Well, there’s a little logo thingy off to the left, I think? Somewhere. It was on the right way! The only way. Makes you look like a rogue like that. Hahaha. That’s a possibility, too.

*bangs head* Okay, okay. Get that out of your head right now. Goodness. And you complain about my mythical flirting! Look a bird!

No, no. I think I’m about 50% righter, wouldn’t you say?

        That was…wasn’t me.

      • 81 FictionFan June 17, 2016 at 20:13

Uh-uh – nope! It was there even when you took the hat off! Well, I checked – and if there is a logo thingy it’s way too small to be seen! D’you know, I’d never realised before that Ruber is your brother…

*laughs guiltily* Not my fault!! You put the idea there! You trapped me into wickedness!

        Well, OK… but 50% of zero isn’t very much…

        A likely story!

      • 82 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 13:07

It was not! It was all a mess, tho. Cause I never brush. Well I do. Just not often like, see. Ruber my brother…oh! Hahahahahahaha. Umm…well, he’s…he’s…

I didn’t do it! Imagine if I did that sort of thing, I think you’d take my head off with a saw. (If you have those in Scotland…haha! Sorry.)

That’s the story of my life. *cries*

      • 83 FictionFan June 21, 2016 at 16:46

The joy of short hair is rarely needing to brush. Imagine poor Kenny! By the time he gets his hair right in the morning, it must be about time for him to go to bed. *laughs* I love when the Punchy voices slip out in your vids…

I’ll have you know the Scots invented the saw!! *tries to look convincing* But it would be too messy and time consuming to saw your head off – much better to use the guillotine…

        *chuckles*

      • 84 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 20:57

I should buzz all mine off! Pah and a dadblameit. *laughs* Picking on the poor Mr. G. How could you! He’s a socialist, you know! What? No! I don’t do those voices…

The guillotine! That thing scares me. I’ll pass, if you don’t mind.

      • 85 FictionFan June 23, 2016 at 01:01

Nooooooo!! A bald Professor! I’d cry… Well, I never thought you did, becuase that would mean they’re not real people!!!! But you imitate them sometimes…

Oh, well. Ok then. *kicks dirt*

      • 86 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 14:54

Right. Right. That’s it: I imitate them sometimes. That’s all, mind. Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel are bald…and Statham!

        *laughs* That’s cool

      • 87 FictionFan June 25, 2016 at 18:52

Don’t care! You can’t be bald and that’s that! *folds arms and stares sternly*

      • 88 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 19:00

Fine. *kicks dirt* Can I get a gold chain yet?

      • 89 FictionFan June 27, 2016 at 12:13

Nope! Sorry! And no tattoos!! I’ve been kind enough in allowing the t-shirt/tie combo, I feel…

      • 90 Professor VJ Duke June 28, 2016 at 13:25

Hahaha! And the cool hat. You must admit that looks grand!

      • 91 FictionFan June 28, 2016 at 17:02

I do rather like the hat…

      • 92 Professor VJ Duke June 29, 2016 at 13:12

        You do?! *surprised*

      • 93 FictionFan June 29, 2016 at 18:08

        *nods* It’s a bunnet!

      • 94 Professor VJ Duke June 30, 2016 at 11:14

        Is that food?

      • 95 FictionFan June 30, 2016 at 19:03

I’ll eat my hat if it is!

  13. 96 Haylee June 15, 2016 at 17:43

Hahaha, is your brother British?! ;) was loving the change of accent! I’m too short for a brolly – either I rip people’s eyes out as as pass by with one or I get wet anyway if someone carries it for me as it’s about three feet above my head. Useless.
All the yesses (probably too many esses) on Jurassic World and Last Samurai. Can’t say I can remember the score from JC though – will have to give it a rematch.

    • 97 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:26

You know, he must! I wonder how he got one, tho. It’s sorta funny, if you think on it. Him with one, me completely accent-less. *shrugs* A brolly!!!! Hahahahahahaha! That’s a great name. My new name for umbrellas, in fact. *writes it down* You poke people in the eyes? That’s a good fighting technique, now that you mention it.

You must listen to the JC score! It’s the bessssssssssssst!

      • 98 Haylee June 16, 2016 at 15:07

I shall search for it now… Otherwise I’ll forget. See, British slang terms are brilliant. I do think brollies make a good weapon when they’re the automatically extendable/opening ones – used to fling mine about like a robotic shield!

      • 99 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:35

Like the penguin kinda does! There’s so many British slang terms, it’s just not fair.

      • 100 Haylee June 17, 2016 at 15:29

I’m short enough to be the Penguin…but I hope I don’t waddle as much!

      • 101 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 13:00

*laughs* Oh you’re not a penguin! But imagine if you were. I think they’re pretty cool. You’d have to discover flight for them, I think

      • 102 Haylee June 21, 2016 at 14:07

But that’s nowhere near as much fun as sliding on your stomach!

      • 103 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 20:51

True! Okay, can I be one now?

      • 104 Haylee June 22, 2016 at 21:04

You already have the colour situation sorted, so yes, penguin away!

      • 105 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 21:06

        Wait…you mean I’m colored like a penguin?!

      • 106 Haylee June 22, 2016 at 21:13

The black and white profile pic says yes.

      • 107 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 14:35

Ohhhh…good call! I think I should change it back to letters.

      • 108 Haylee June 24, 2016 at 16:43

No! We like seeing your face! Have you been tinkering with your site? All your comments have a funny little link attached 🤔

      • 109 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 17:30

Really? Okay, if you say so. Oh dear. What have I messed up now? There should be a rate thingy on each comment…? Maybe?

      • 110 Haylee June 26, 2016 at 19:18

Oh yes… It shows up on your actual site but I read most comments from the WordPress app. Confusion sorted! :)

      • 111 Professor VJ Duke June 28, 2016 at 13:14

Ohhhh…you know, I’ve never gotten the app. I should, tho.

It’s convenient for reading posts and comments but then I think I miss out on seeing the extra bits on actual websites. Plus, I’m incapable of not responding to a notification if I see it. I should probably delete to free up my time!

*laughs* See! That’s what I’d do! Always answering and whatnot. I’d really be a phone head then. And, yes, I’d blame it on you.

Be the dinosaur or samurai warrior, but not John Cater. Bad movie and besides he seemed a little….weak to me. Jus sayin’ 😏

    • 115 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:23

Not John Carter? You didn’t like it? Weak? Didn’t thou see how high he could jump?!

      • 116 Lady Dunamis June 16, 2016 at 14:59

        😴😴😴

      • 117 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:34

        Humph noodles.

  15. 118 PorterGirl June 15, 2016 at 17:24

Oh yes, the John Carter soundtrack is super. As you know, I don’t really watch films but I liked The Last Samurai.
I agree with you about umbrellas. I hate the buggers. You won’t catch me with one of those.
Also – looking reem, Professor! Very reem.

    • 119 Haylee June 15, 2016 at 17:38

The use of the word ‘reem’ made me snort a little too loudly! 😀

      • 120 PorterGirl June 15, 2016 at 17:52

I just couldn’t resist it. With the hat and the hair… it’s just begging for ‘reem’ ;)

      • 121 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:23

Oh dear. Now I’m wondering what it means.

    • 122 Professor VJ Duke June 16, 2016 at 14:21

You like the JohnC soundtrack? *happy dance* See, there’s my dance for the occasion. Yes, umbrellas are for funerals, aren’t they? I bet they are.

Reem! That’s what an otter looks like , I bet

      • 123 PorterGirl June 17, 2016 at 05:18

It’s a great dance, Professor. Better than my going to the toilet dance.
Umbrellas make good weapons and that is all they should be used for!

      • 124 Professor VJ Duke June 17, 2016 at 14:55

        Sword umbrellas! Hahahahahahahah

      • 125 PorterGirl June 17, 2016 at 15:26

        YES. That also fire grenades.

      • 126 Professor VJ Duke June 21, 2016 at 12:59

I’d be quite lethal with a grenade.

      • 127 PorterGirl June 21, 2016 at 13:28

You are quite lethal anyway! Grenades could be a step too far, now I think on it…

      • 128 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 20:49

Please, please! Can I have one?

      • 129 PorterGirl June 22, 2016 at 20:52

Oh, go on then. Just because it’s you.

      • 130 Professor VJ Duke June 22, 2016 at 21:05

And cause I’m a bit bratty

      • 131 PorterGirl June 22, 2016 at 21:08

And I don’t want you to rampage. Again.

      • 132 Professor VJ Duke June 24, 2016 at 14:31

I feel like it, the sudden, you know.

      • 133 PorterGirl June 26, 2016 at 08:33

        Oh my *takes cover*

      • 134 Professor VJ Duke June 26, 2016 at 19:01

        *rampages*

      • 135 PorterGirl June 27, 2016 at 03:58

        Eeeek!!
